We spent Sunday morning at the refuge and could not have been happier with our experience. You see the animals close up and learn about the important mission of this refuge on a fun guided tour. Our daughter (who loves animals) became ill on the tour and they could not have been nicer or more accommodating (finding her shade, drinks,... More

Our local friends took us to this wonderful place. Laurel Patrick, the founder and inspiration behind this little jewel has put together a refuge for lost animals and a place to teach the locals the importance of the environment. She has several animals, carefully maintained and cared for, which are donated. Now she has a kinkajou, coatis, injured hawks and... More

My son and I had a wonderful visit at El Refugio del Potosi. We took the bus from Zihua, getting off in Los Achotes and then jumped on the back of a flat bed truck for the last couple of miles. Thankfully the truck had a canvas top. The trip there was an adventure in itself. This is a pretty... More

At the time of our visit, this Refugio was open Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays from 10-5. This is an amazing project and we spent a very enjoyable couple of hours here. We saw turtles, huge and multiple iguanas, coatamundi, snakes large and small, the gorgeous macaws, the porcupine, spiders, insects, and many other birds of prey. They have constructed an... More

We got a lift to the refugio again this year and was able to spend some more time there. This was mostly spent in front of the hummingbird feeders again. Cost is $6 US and will include a tour with a knowledgable, English-speaking tour guide. Only open certain days of the week - check their website. Lots of different parrots... More

There are many special creatures at El Refugio de Potosi but this post is meant for hummingbird lovers like myself. Oh my goodness...to be surrounded by dozens of hummingbirds hovering so close by you are nearly deafened by their whirring wings...I was blissfully mesmerized by the swarm of hummingbirds all aflutter around me in just a little corner of this... Our visit to Potosi was part of a day-long trip to several attractions in the area. 60 pesos per person admission and a staff member accompanied us to answer questions and show us the animals (for a tip just like everywhere else in Mexico). Personally, I'm not a big fan of looking at animals and birds in cages although my... More

We took a day trip that included a stop here. We really loved everything about it. The displays were well set up and easily accessible. The guides were passionate and interested in answering all of our questions. We had the opportunity for a close up experience with the Military Macaws, hummingbirds and the porcupine. This is truly an opportunity to... More

Beautiful area, plants, birds, animals, reptiles. One couldn't ask for more. A guided tour is offered by very educated and English speading guides that explain all about the Refugio and it's occupants.

I went to El Refugio with my husband & 3 year old. It was an excellent day trip, we all enjoyed it. Our guide was very knowledgeable. There were some interesting creatures & birds they are rehabilitating. The porcupine & snakes were my favorite & we even got to hold them. We took the bus from La Ropa, took us... More
