In 1994, Matthew Grogono developed an innovative technique, to cut bottles, grind rims and polish vessels into beautiful glassware; with smooth brims, that feel wonderful in your hand.Over two decades of experimentation, OTG developed a diversified line of products, including drinking glasses, vases, bowls and candle holders of various colours and sizes. Each piece is enhanced when sandblasted with a northern pattern. Our patterns are created by local artists and reflect the unique ecology of northern Canada. It is growing in popularity because of its’ originality, its’ environmental innovation and its’ beauty. We estimate that over 95, 000 bottles have been transformed by OTG since 1994 and we believe that it’s only the beginning. We now offer fun, 2 hour workshops 3 times a day, 6 days a week, where participants get to design and create their very own personalized souvenir, gift or functional glassware. « less

Bought souvenirs here. Four individual glasses. Used them at home all the time. Remind us of our fond memories of Yellowknife. Glasses made out of bottom of bottles. Forget recycling. This is reusing. You could sign up for a class. We didn't this time. Fee for signing up for lesson.

It was great fun doing the workshop! I have a strong appreciation for what Matthew is doing, recycling all those bottles and turning them into something useful. Most of all was the experience in sand blasting my own designs. I left with 7 little souvenirs :)

This is a must do while visiting yellowknife. The concept is making beautiful glass ware out of recylced wine bottles. You need to make an appointment. The yard is full of old wine bottle, all colors and shapes and sizes. Pick a bottle and proceed to the studio workshop at the back. You will be greeted by the facilitator who... More

My experience far exceeded my expectation. I really enjoyed the story of how the place came to be and having the opportunity to create my own vase was so much fun. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

I was recently at a convention in Yellowknife and as an executive member of our association, my husband and I were each given a gift of glassware from Old Town Glassworks. Very unique as each piece is one of a kind. The next day, while we were in meetings, the spouses of the delegates got to go on a tour... More

Attended the workshop this afternoon with family (2 adults, 3 kids). We all had a great time learning the process of turning old glass products into really nice pieces of art. We all got to create our own work. Would recommend for tourists and locals (like ourselves). Kid friendly (our youngest is 6).

Old Town Glassworks provided an engaging, memorable, glass-etching workshop for our entire party of five (3 adults, 2 kids). The two-hour workshop began with a fascinating demonstration of how OTG takes recycled wine bottles and cuts them down into vessels of various shapes and sizes. (The tools used are themselves feats of creative engineering, including a c.1960 Hoover washing machine... More

...with the Old Town Glassworks of Yellowknife... In a city famous around the world for folks recycling everything from its dump... Old Town Glassworks does one better by keeping glass right out of the dump and creating all their stuff in the workshop behind the store. This worker's run co-op will teach you how to make practical objects out of... More
