Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round. « less

We took the bus from Victoria which was convenient but took a little longer than we expected. The spring bulbs and blossom were all in bloom and the gardens were immaculate- so many photo opportunities! The gardens were quiet as it was towards the end of the day and we really could have spent an hour or two longer here... More

My family visited on a misty, October day. Despite the weather-and they even put out neat little containers of clear umbrellas for guests to use-it was gorgeous. Perhaps the weather even helped some with the crowds but there were lots of people even then. I imagine summer days must be jam packed! It was lovely just to wander and snap... More

It was great but for our second visit, this one was not as exciting..roses @ were not in full bloom. Prices/rate should be the same all year round and they should give discounts.

The tulips were everywhere at the gardens. After all, it is May. The highlight of the Gardens is the Sunken Garden, which was converted from a quarry. One can easily spend 2-3 hours at the Gardens.

Quite an expensive attraction but it is clear where the admission fees go - the gardens are very well looked after and the sunken garden is wonderful.

Heard so much good things about the garden and I took the tour to the garden while visiting Vancouver Island. After visiting so many gardens around the world, I can only say that this garden is just a nice garden but not impressive like showed in the pictures, not sure whether is because of the season that I visited (... I am completely averse to crowds, but somehow I an ignore them fully whenever I visit Butchart Gardens. I'm not sure if it's that the staff has completely solved the problems of crowd control or if it is just so exquisite at the gardens. No matter how often I go, I can't stop myself taking more pictures or marveling at... More

We took the luxury bus from The Empress hotel - the driver was great and you get to learn a little about Victoria and the price includes the gardens admission. It saves you money to do it this way if you don't have a car. The gardens are beautiful and the food was great in the self serve dining room.

I was a bit hesitant to go here, but it was very nice, probably a bit boring for young kids. They give you free see through plastic umbrellas, and the rain didn't really spoil it at all. You only need 3 hours max here.
