E F Benson lived here (the author of Mapp & Lucia) but before him, the American author Henry James lived here too! Fabulous historic and literary connotations here.

little gem of a house with literary connections but it is national trust whose properties always rate a visit
I can hardly recognise Lamb House from some of the reviews here - it is of tremendous literary interest. Both Henry James and E F Benson lived here. Elegant exterior to this house hides a somewhat drab interior; there is really noty a great deal to see here. It's worth a visit but don't expect to rapt to any extent. The garden is definitely worth a look round, much more so than the house.
Found this by chance, although we are NT members we didn't visit Rye specifically for this. It had just opened, and was already busy and cramped. Only 3 rooms open, sparsely furnished and with a few notes. A large garden was accessed via french window in one room, and this was charming and well kept. The visit only took us...

Three small rooms, crammed full of people is all you get see. Why can't the rest of the house be opened, and why not open on more than two days a week so it's less crowded?
Formerly lived in by author Henry James, but more relevantly by E.F.Benson, author of the Mapp &Lucia books. Lamb House and other places in Rye actually figure in his books. However, the National Trust don't seem to rate him and understate his importance.
Tranquil gardens, polite and helpful staff -a credit to the National Trust. The staff explained in detail about the house's inhabitants and provided information to visit Kipling's home Bateman's which was also a delight.
Such a beautiful house (although not many rooms are open to the public) and the garden is wonderful. I could have sat there all day. It is suprising to find such a large, peaceful garden in the middle of Rye. Unfortunately we didn't have time for one of their cream teas, which, from what I could see looked very good.It...

We tried several times to get into the house, but it has limited opening times. If you are a Henry James fan Im sure it is a `must' visit, however as we just wanted to look at a nice old house there wasnt a lot for us to see.
