I had a nice cultural trail upon the Tougher Padraig yesterday and you couldn't have a better time of the year to be there. During the month of April the Rolling Sun can be seen either from horseback or on the Bohea Stone. This neolithical phenononem dates back thousands of years and is a sight to behold. Off the tourist... More

If you read my review of the clew bay hotel or westport house, you will know that while doing this tour as part of Heritage week, my wife had to leave so the bus driver (Aileen), dropped her off to her son at Croke Patrick and he delivered his tourists back to town then dropped her off to the hotel... A very interesting, old musty place with all sorts of artifacts and personal memorabilia from historical moments and people in the area. It is laid out by subject and crammed into cases. If they would only modernize the space, it would be a bigger attraction. We only had 45 minutes before it closed and we could have taken twice as... More

Bohea Stone on the Tougher Padraig Walk. Very interesting stone placement with its alignment with the pyramidical Croagh Patrick and the famous Rolling Sun, which occurs twice a year. I'll attach photos of this I took last year.

The trail is very scenic but you will need a guidebook. Unfortunately some sites only add up to a few stones and interpretation or putting the site in context is difficult. You really need to be into this sort of stuff to enjoy. I dont think its suitable for children as they would be pretty bored.

If you like searching through ruins and walking through history, the Clew Bay archaeological trail will keep you occupied for days. I, too, bought the booklet in the Westport Tourist office and it has everything brilliantly highlighted in logical order. A trip out to Clare Island to see the Abbey with its medieval wall paintings and tomb of the Pirate... More

When driving along the roads in and around Westport, my interest was aroused by the brown "Clew Bay Archaeological Trail" sign-posts dotted along the roadsides. A visit to the tourist office in Westport and a talk with a very helpful lady made all things clear. The trail consists of 21 sites along 35km from Westport through Murrisk, Louisburg and beyond...
