In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. « less

This was my first experience in France with a Cathedral and it was the first thing I saw as I came into Bayeux. Walked all around it in the evening and went back the next day to go inside. Ate lunch right under it-fantastic.

This magnificent cathedral is typical of so many French cathedrals - stone columns and stained glass. Some interesting paintings, plenty of candles to light and a timeline showing Roman Emperors, Popes etc. worth seeing if you like churches.

You cannot stay in Bayeux without visiting the cathedral. It was a beautiful example of the architecture. I enjoyed the visit.

This 11th century Gothic cathedral in a Romanesque style is stunning. When I was there I was lucky as it was the day the children were being confirmed by the bishop so the ceremony was full of pomp and splendour with the organ giving its best! Wonderful!

We loved the charm of the city of Bayeux. The town's people were far more helpful and less pretentious than some of the folks we encountered in Paris. This is also exemplified in the warmth of the Cathedrale Notre Dame de Bayeux. Stepping into this cathedral you felt solemnity surrounded you (unlike the Notre Dame in Paris, in which throngs... Bayeaux is a lovely city. We debated long and hard about staying in Bayeaux or Caen... I'm so glad we picked Bayeaux. I was not expecting the Cathedrale, but when we arrived late in the afternoon, there it was you couldn't miss the outline against the dark blue sky. We did hear the organ which sounded just lovely

France is blessed with many truly magnificent Cathedrals, this i thought is not one of them. But still very good if you like this sort of thing. Excellent stained glass. As you are here for the Tapestry you may as well see the Cathederal as its free to enter so you have nothing to loose.

I am not inspired or cowed by the grandeur of mighty religious buildings, but one must be impressed by the size and decoration of this cathedral. The sheer size is awesome. There are some wall paintings and decorations worthy of note. We were able to hear the organ in full voice and a choir , which made the experience more... More
