Well, as many have said, it's not a typical museum. There is a precious little about the man himself, his works, his influences, his life...I would best decribe this as a kind of eccentric personal take on the Satie character or mood. From a giant pear with wings to a self-pedalled carousel, it's all very odd, not to say slightly annoying. Actually the carousel is quite fun and worth the 6.5 Euro price on its own. Otherwise be prepared to whizz round failry quickly - don't build your morning or afternoon around this (unless you add the nearby butterfly house too - more entertaining and informative, frankly). The all-white room containing a single self-playing white Yamaha grand was quite nice. But frustratingly (for a pianist) you can't turn the auto-Satie off and have a tinkle yourself. Shame. I was looking forward to playing something incredibly traditional, formal, and strictly to time, just to annoy back the spirit of Satie. One of his contemporaries called him 'Esot-Erik' - which fits this place perfectly. Or perhaps also 'somewhat un-Satie-sfying'. That said, it's different, so....

A quirky museum. Tales few prisoners as visitors are assumed to have a certain level of knowledge of Satie and his work.. Delightfully in synch with the composer. Loved the surrealist touches.

This was the worst museum I have been. No information or items about Satie at all. Full of strange 'art' Wich has nothing to do with Satie and there is no reason at all to visit! Better of reading the Wikipedia page and saving your money!

“The Satie House and Museum (Maisons Saties) is dedicated to composer and musician Erik Satie. Born in 1866 in Honfleur, this genius worked with such great names as Picasso or Braque, and inspired artists like Debussy and Ravel. During the visit, you will walk through the different rooms with an audioguide which will be triggered according to the room where you are. It’s really immersive!”
The triggers were difficult to manage. The slightest move and it would restart again. You had to be extremely still.
I loved the interactive piece that you could participate in.
It’s an interesting museum to say the least but I am a bit bummed I didn’t get to enjoy the whole audioguide triggers to its fullest.

Was in Honfleur a few years ago and visited the Erik Satie House - absolutely loved it. We are returning to Honfleur next month and we are so looking forward to returning. A real gem and intriguing. Loved Satie's music and love this House.
Thank you.
Thank you.

I don't quite know what to say about this museum.
If you come here expecting "the usual" - i.e. a house laid out "as it was in the composer's day" and displaying his possessions or to learn a lot of detail about Satie's life, you will probably come away disappointed.
The house is now much more of "an experience" with modern artworks laid out in each room - some of them rather bizarre and even zany - and little in there to do with Satie i.e. his possessions.
It is certainly imaginative, but its displays in this form could have been shown in any building anywhere.
The music used is very limited indeed - very nice if you like the Gymnopedies!
More of an a mdern art gallery or "experience" than a person's house.

Not sure what we were expecting, but it sure wasn't this! Super fun and interesting, but if you are looking for a retrospective of Satie's musical development, this ain't it. What this is instead is a multi-media fantasm of Satie's artistic spirit. Fantastic!

Interesting. Satie was an early 20th century composer well ahead of his time. The museums use of sights & sound demonstrates this very well. Agree, this museum may not be for everyone, a bit avant garde.

You need to know something of Satie besides his music to have any chance of understanding this museum. This is not a place to learn about him from the beginning. It also helps to know French. There is an English audio guide, but written explanations of exhibits are only in French. You won’t get the full experience otherwise. The museum fits the man’s personality. Or the myth of the man. It will be interesting if you are a fan. If not, you’ll be scratching your head. The player piano was spooky. That was my favorite part.

Only if you are interested in more than the music. It is an interactive museum, not very big. Learn more about the person behind the music. A must do.
