The island has a few trails to hike on, and quite a few beaches (pebbly, like most of the areas outside of Cannes). The museum inside Fort Royal was very enjoyable and educational.
I go there every year when I visit Cannes and I never get tired of it. The color of the water is wonderful and the peace and tranquility make it a must place to visit to scape from Cannes loudness.
Short trip by boat from the port at Cannes. Takes about 15 minutes. Good views of Cannes and the port from St Marguerite. Full of trees with good walks on the island.

It's like 15 minutes rapid boat trip from harbour next to the Palais, it's good place for a picnic (a few spots) and walk through nice pine forest.
We visited this island twice during our 5 days stay in Cannes, and we enjoyed it very much. A little thing we lacked was a "what to pack" guide. We kind of went without really reaaaly knowing what to expect or preparing well for it, the first time around, so here it goes for the rest of you...

Love going to these islands when we visit Cannes. My kids especially love the boat ride. We mostly go to Ile st Marguerite, the larger of the two islands.
ADVICE
Take good shoes with you, lots of pebbles and large stones
A buggy if with small kids, the island is huge
A folding chair and umbrella, when it gets hot...

Hop on a big tourist boat straight from the marina in cannes, right next to the palais des festival.
Takes around 30min(cant remember exactly).
Upon arrival you are met by beautiful little creeks and forrest on this little islands that nobody lives on except for french monks.

This island is a nature reserve - and not commercialised - made a good break from the showiness of Cannes. OK the beaches are stony but we found a lovely quite beach with a great view and a picnic site in the forest behind - we noticed several other picnic sites on our walk from the quay - so picnicers...
