This is an excellent 'off the beaten track' place to visit for a few hours in the afternoon or morning.

Twenty chapels filled with life size figures telling the story of St. Francis dominate a mountain with beautiful sightings of Lake Orta. This is easily worth a couple of hours in any visit to the area.

Climb the hill from Orta, and you will find yourself amidst a scattering of 23 (if I remember correctly) chapels bursting with hundreds of exceptionally well preserved frescoes, mainly detailing various tales from the life of St. Francis. At the northern end is a Franciscan monastery, which we did not visit, although we did enjoy the majestic view it commands... More

The sacred mountain of Orta is an extraordinary devotion to St Francis of Assisi with about 20 chapels built between the 15 - 17th centuries. It is a very peaceful and shady spot with views across the lake and beyond. Well worth a visit and a picnic or day trip.

We walked from Orta up to Sacro Monte. It is a very steep walk but the scenery is lovely. When you reach the top the views are stunning. There are 20 chapels there and each one is different so you have to see them all.

We walked up here and it was worth the hike from Orta San Giulio when you get up there you will see that you can drive from the other side of the hill in 2 seconds! Views on the walk up are worth it and you see some exclusive residences too! (enough to turn you quite green!) The path is... More

Quiet place with very small chapels very well integrated in the landscape. It has a great view to Lake Orta and San Giulio island

It was my second time to visti Orta and had to climb to see the Sacro Monte di Orta. Up there you have 20 chapels of which were build during the 16 century. In each chapel if does explain the lifestory of St Francis. Quite interesting and from there you have a supberb with of the Island of San Guilio,... More

During the International Poetry Festival at Orta at the end of September, the poets visit the chapels of the Sacro Monte one of the days and read some of their poems inside or outside most of the chapels. Fascinating.. You can join in and listen to some of the best poets in the world today.
