We enjoyed the art on the walls and the large, airy body of this basilica. As a service was begun we shortened our stay, but one could easily spend an hour exploring, if one likes to linger over art and religious artifacts. Some great views of the tower and duomo from the yard of San Domenico.

I swear she winked at me! It's a gruesome tradition to cut bits and pieces off of dead bodies and put them on display for veneration and here you have a head and her finger on a socle....along with the implements of mortification. The church itself has all the charm of a barn, undecorated except for a few fragments and... More

With my name, this was one of my favorite stops. Be sure to book a guide to tell you the background story of the saint. A must see when in Italy.

Another old church but without many attractions. The biggest curiosity is to be the chapel of St. Catherine of Siena.

This chapel is dedicated to St Catherine the patron saint of Siena where her incorrupt head and finger enshrines in a gilt encasement on the side altar. And on this church on your right as you enter you will find the genuine portrait of St Catherine by her friend. The structure of the church is simple but beautiful with gothic... More

To my tastes, the church doesn't have a coherent look. Architecturally, it's not striking or particularly significant. It is big, though, cavernous, really. Mostly empty inside, it's most famous for the side altar, where St. Catherine's head and thumb reside. Frescoes by Sodoma flank her relics. Many of the stained glass works are modern, particularly the ones behind the main... More

The famous fresco of St. Catherine of Siena is here and it is close to her "house" The new stained glass windows are interesting as are the new bronze doors. It isn't the most beautiful church and a bit of a mish mash but has it's own charm.

More than just the chapel for St. Catherine of Siena and her relic -- also has stunning stained glass windows - many from post WW-II.

The interior does not match the exterior but the head of Santa Catarina makes it quite quirky and the contrast with the Duomo quite striking. Must be seen if you have the time to do so.
