It is amazing how impressed we can be sometimes. This abbey is amazing. If you are near Montalcino or Pienza, have a look.

This is imposing from the outside but was very cold and uninviting on the interior, When we visited the place was empty and uninviting, no signs telling time of next service etc, and the English brochures were out of supply. It was all a bit disappointing really. Car parking was 1.50 Euro per hour

What a terrific little place! We were in Montalcino for a winery visit, and we wanted to hear the monks sing in prayer. We arrived about 45 minutes before the scheduled prayer and walked around and inside the abbey. I was expecting a full chorus, but about 4 monks appeared from the side walls and walked to their places. It... More

No visit to Montalcino is complete without the short drive outside the city walls to the valley where this imposing old abbey dominates. Whether you see it during daylight or return in the evening for vespers, the ancient stones are certain to touch your heart. Its position is superb (as Benedictine and Cistercian abbeys usually were) and the surrounding landscape... More

We visited the abbey as part of our walking holiday in Tuscany. The day we arrived was drizzly and grey. We were able to sit in on part of one of the regular prayer sessions with the Benedictine monks and listen to the singing. After the monks and other visitors filed out, we sat there and contemplated the lot of... More

After a long morning walk through the mists, we rounded the bend to see this amazing abbey situated in the valley. This is one of the most beautiful areas we visited in Tuscany. Ancient ollive trees, the surrounding hillsides, the echo of the monk playing his oboeseque instrument, all made for a rather surreal experience. Wish I would have been... More

Lovely abbey that you can walk around. There is a cafe overlooking the abbey that is open in the summer until around October which would have been nice.

The drive to Sant'Antimo is stunningly beautiful. The day that we visited for services, there was a woman in a wheelchair also visiting. The monk who was policing the visitors was incredibly unaccommodating to this woman. His behavior destroyed whatever spiritual atmosphere the place might have had under other circumstances. We visited in May 2011.

I feel very lucky to have visited this Abbey. It is located down a quiet road a little way from the town of Montalcino. It is a quiet, spiritual spot. You can hear the wind blowing through the trees in the olive grove and instantly feel a sense of peace. If you peek inside the church or go inside, you... More

If you're in the vicinity of Sant'Antimo Abbey, a short drive Montalcino in Tuscany, it's worth taking some time to experience it. Perhaps less than a 10 minute drive through the undulating and picturesque hills from Montalcino nestles this atypical spiritual cloister. Simplistic by design, yet stunningly beautiful, the abbey's beauty is breathtaking. You won't find stained glass, frescoed domes... More
