Assisi is a beautiful hill town which we found unexpectedly charming. There are many churches (of course) and lots of atmospheric alleys and stairs with phenominal views. The Basilica, for us, was a let down. Very crowded. Full of tour groups. Maybe because we aren't Catholic we didn't "get" the site? Visit the smaller churches (like San Stefano) in addition! More

A very impressive and atmospheric visit and no visit to Assisi is complete without including the Basilica di San Francesco. One tip though is unless you really feel the need to attend a service it is best to avoid a visit at such times, such as Sunday mornings, as it can become very overcrowded which may spoil your tour if... We've visited many cathedrals throughout the various countries we've travelled and after a while it's hard to remember all of the details. But Basilica di San Francesco will be remembered forever. It's perched on top of the hill at the edge of town allowing you to marvel in its shear size. The interior is equally as memorable with hand painted... More

The frescoes in the upper basilica are colourful and beautiful. Bring binoculars to get a good look. Don't miss out on experiencing a religious office in the lower chapel. The chapel itself is beautiful, and St Francis' tomb in the crypt is quite special. Hearing the monks and nuns singing above is very moving. The first office is at 7AM More

It is really hard to move from looking at the countryside views but going inside is another world. For having gone thru what it has, it is in amazing shape. The effort put in to build and maintain this site is tremendous. More

We visited Assisi almost on a whim and were amazed at the Basillica. An imposing building at the bottom of the old town it's free to enter and well worth the effort. Built on several levels the upper is a wonder of frescoes, the lower ones incredibly atmospheric areas of worship. There is a terrace at the rear overlooking cloisters.... More
