We were told that Alfama was a must see in Lisbon but we remained a bit deluded by it. It was quite dirty and degradated, maybe nice for a nite tour to listen some fado, but to be honest there are best areas in Lisbon.

My appartment was in Alfama and it's incredible place to stay. You can hear fado all day long! But you have to walk and walk up and down and take yellow train to feel the streets and houses and people of Alfama.

Very hilly and quite winding. Be prepared to walk. Once you get to the top, the view will blow you away! Simply awesome

out of time! must see. a bit touristy in some places but worthwhile. great to discover the history of the city and enjoy stunning views. be patient if you're waiting for the old tram where tourists and locals meet.

This is a must see in the city but you also have to keep in mind that you're doing the touristy thing if you go. No problem with that, just don't expect the real Portugal! Strange and interesting side streets, great little coffee shops, a good place to get lost. Spend a day and then go some place better.

If you visit this place on your own, you won't be able to appreciate why it's very significant. The guide was able to show us places within Alfama that are significant and she was able to take us back in time. This explained how this hilly landscape of a city made Lisbon unique. Alfama reminds us visitors about the Portugal... More

The Alfama can be rather crowded with both tourists and partying locals, but that doesn't at all diminish its charm. Unlike quaint areas of say Paris or Prague the Alfama is still scruffy and cheap. And everywhere you wander there are steep narrow streets at strange angles, charcoal braziers grilling fish, little bars. Sheer enjoyment.

What a charming old neighborhood. We rented an apartment here for a few days while visiting the city and could not have been happier. The windy little streets, the trams, the little shops and restaurants, the beautiful architecture everywhere and the proximity to many attractions and sights made this an ideal neighborhood for us to stay in. It is safe... More
