Open Tuesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

“superb collection”

combine this with the glyptothek which is within walking distance. small intimate museum with superb sculptures made by a man few still know. interesting collecting of paintings, coins, egyptian artefacts and greek vases upstairs. i was the only visitor one sunday afternoon. had the entire museum to myself while the audio guide explained everything to me. the building itself and... “The best museum in Kobenhavn!”

The museum was built to house the collection of Thorveldsen, Denmarks most famous sculpture - he is even buried I. The courtyard! Fabulous exhibits including his own personal collection of art on the top floor. Excellent but slightly academic audio guide - but it is free! Museum is free on Wednesdays. We are absolutely delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit. It is a great idea to go by the church Vor Frue Kirke (i.e. Københavns Domkirke) to see Christ and the apostles in their “natural” settings. The church is only a short walk away from Thorvaldsens Museum. We hope to see you again! More

“Brilliant statues”

“The most enjoyable hour you can spend in Copenhagen”

I had an hour between business meetings and it turned out to be my favorite hour of the week! The ground floor sculptures are superb, but don't miss the pictures on the first floor either. The wall paintings are also outstanding. Quirky in teh best possible way and certainly not to be missed on any trip to Copenhagen.

The museum owns the original paster versions of Thorvaldsen's famous statues. Maximillian elector of Bavaria equestian statue. And Stanislaw Poniatowsky. The germans blew up the equestian statue in Warzaw during WW2, a new copy was made from this original and presented to Poland afterwards. And the pope who was present at Napoleons coronation. “Worth visiting for both paintings and sculpture”

Thorvaldsen was an academic sculptor who trained in Italy. His works look very conventional to today's viewer, though one can only admire his technique and the beauty of certain works. If you like neo-classicism there is nothing better in Europe. The way Thorvaldsen became a national figure is also impressive and says a lot about the Danes.

“Sculpture at its Best.”

The present museum is the original museum build and opened in 1848. That's right, not only are you privileged to see one of the most famous sculptures from the 1770 to 1844 but a building as well. “Must See this!”

This doesn't look much from the outside but it is really worth a visit. It reminds me of museums from another era....very atmospheric especially as the donor is buried in the courtyard. The sculpture collection is just marvelous. I had a crick in my neck from just starring at everything. Highly recommended on a visit to this lovely city

I come here for the art but also very much for the rooms in the building which is one of my favorite places in CPH. Just love the place...
