The Arbaejarsafn is a really nice open air museum, which gives a great insight in the history of Iceland.
Lots of old Reykjavik houses rebuilt here and furnished in period style. Also a few sheet and chickens. The turf-roofed church was fascinating too. There was live music and quite a party atmosphere when we went (a Sunday). Easy to get to by bus.
Highly recommend Arbaejarsafn, particularly if you go on a guided tour (free each day, usually at 1 pm) and if the weather cooperates. I brought a group and we found it very interesting and a good cultural/historical experience in contrast to all of Iceland's outstanding natural attractions.
Overlooking the city, the outdoor museum consists of several period houses, a church and workshops which depict how the earliest settlers lived. If you are limited in time, there are other things which might be of more interest unless history is your thing.
A very pleasant experience to take a walk among the old turf houses and take a peak back to the past. You can enter all of the houses and see how people lived in Iceland up until the 20th century.
Glimpses of a simplier life in Iceland. Amazing collection of items used for daily living in this challenging but beautiful place to live. It's surprising how recently people lived in turf houses off the grid.
Unfortunately, the tourist information on this museum was not accurate and having got the bus and walked some distance to get there (in the freezing cold/snow flurries), we were told that it was closed. We had been told by our hotel that it was open at 1pm but upon arrival we were informed that until June it is open at... More
You must take a local bus to this living history museum but it is very simple and well worth it. The museum shows many styles of old houses set in a rural setting. Many of the buildings are furnished and open for touring. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.
More than a museum, Arbaejarsafn is a village with all old factories (iron, wool, candles, ...) and houses. You can discover walking in the houses how Icelanders'life was in the old times. This is a great place to visit!
