We joined the free one-hour highlights tour, and our volunteer guide took us around and told us the stories behind their pieces of art. We started in the aboriginal section. I was surprised commercial Aboriginal art has only been around since the 1970's. Before that, their art was more for ceremonial purposes and done on bark or body art.

Absolutely beautiful artwork and amazing position in canberra. Staff were quite weird and rude though.

Visited on a Sunday and it was reasonably quiet and peaceful. Lots of different sorts of art to see and enjoy. Was easy to follow the map and go directly to areas of interest. The highlight was definitely the Monet and the Sydney Nolan collection. Friendly and helpful staff.

If you want to see some amazing and iconic art you will have plenty to admire. Parking a dream ,classic australian bush feel outside and I loved the grassy dome , make sure to go inside it.
We joined a tour and looked at Sydney Nolan's paintings of Ned Kelly, they look good all together in a disiplay as you get the whole picture but I wouldn't want any single one on my wall, this is the right place for them. The aboriginal collections were really good and Loved the totem pole coffins on the ground floor...
