This has a little bit of everything for visitors to Auckland! The ferry ride over allows you to enjoy the city from the water, you get a wonderful view of the city from the top and if you are not fit you can take the tram to top otherwise enjoy walking around the volcano and definitely explore the caves. This... More

We took the ferry over and took the track to the top. A not too difficult tramp with some great views of Auckland from the top. The lava caves are really good fun but I would recommend taking a torch!!

We caught the 10.30am ferry over to the island and the 12.45pm ferry back to Auckland. During that time we walked to the top and enjoyed the fanastic 360 deg views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. The last 1/2 kilometre of the walk is reasonablely steep but a steady pace gets you to the top. It is advisable to... More

We took the ferry out to Rangitoto after being told that it was a great place for bird-watching. We must have been there on an off day, as all we saw were gulls. The walk to the summit will not be challenging if you are even moderately in shape. Carry food and drink, as there is nothing to be bought... More

Really enjoyed the walk to the summit and the lava caves. I wouldn't say it was an easy walk but ok none the less. Would love to come back and stay there one weekend.

Wear comfortable shoes, take your snacks, hat, sunscreen and water. It is a lovely walk around the island.

My husband and I did the walk to the summit in just over an hour and found it quite tough, especially as we got closer to the top. Make sure you have good shoes, as it can be quite slippery in parts, especially if it has recently rained (which it had the night before we went). The views from the... More

This is a quick day trip for sure. The ferry out there isn't too long and it's very beautiful - especially if you catch it on a day where there are a lot of sailors out and about. Great views. The hike itself is a little bit steep, so brace yourself for that...but the view from the top is worth... More

They told us it was a comfortable hours walk to the top. Yes it was an hour, but not always comfortable. The track went up... and up...and up - for an hour. But we made it (and were the oldest by many years) to the top of the volcano. The views were great and the experience was definitely worth the... More

This is a real nice island, I won't repeat what others have said below. I will just say that if you are, oh, 80 pounds overweight like me, leave about 2 HOURS for the walk up. (The walk down ain't all that easy either, since you're tired -- I saw numerous people fall.) The time allotment is important since there's... More
