The port hills are one of the most amazing places to go in Christchurch, they are the barrier between the city and Lyttleton which is a beautiful place in its own right. Worth the drive and take a picnic or better still go for lunch in one of the many great cafes in Lyttleton then drive up the back road... More

Just to the south of the city these hills offer walking, cycling and driving opportunites all with superb views of the city and beyond: to the ocean one way and in towards the mountains the other. Both the Sugarloaf Preserve and Victoria Park are located here. You should definitely get out here when visiting the city.

Great place for good walking, so close to the city makes these hills very accessible. Well marked walking tracks and mountain bike tracks are abundant. Various levels of fitness catered for too. Worth walking up the Rapaki track for the spectacular view over into the Lyttelton Harbour from the top. In the opposite direction equally lovely vista to the southern... More

I regularly run or walk on the Port Hills as a local person and I frequently meet visitors up there from out of town who are not sure about rockfall risks and also about the access situation post-earthquake. The key points (as at March 2013) are that the summit road along the top is closed to cars, as are some... More

Beautiful. Great mountainbiking, despite the quakes. Excellent for walks or riding. Loads of both trails. Incredible views of the city, beach & estuary.

I've been to Christchurch 5 times, and each time i go, i always make a bee line to the Port Hills. Mostly i drive the summit road and other roads that wind through it although i have walked the tracks from Opawa to the summit. But there are lots of walkers, runners, and cyclists who use the hills at all... More

Plenty of great trails on the hills above Christchurch city. Not crowded and great views over the city, the Pacific in the East and all the way West to the Southern Alps. Good for walking or running.

The Port Hills in Christchurch are a must visit location if you're ever in town. The walks through Victoria Park are varied and well signposted so you can assess which you would like to tackle. I particularly love walking up past the sign of the kiwi to see the view over Lyttleton. If you keep going up to the sign... More
