If you are in the Troodos area, try to include a visit to these churches as part of your itinerary. You should definetely do this if you are renting a car. There are actually 10 churches and as a local i ve only visited 6 of them so far! They are all impressive with magnificent frescoes and interesting architecture. If... More

Ranging in building eras from 1100 to 1500 these little stone churches are delightful. Unfortunately many have to be kept locked against thieves and vandals and finding the key holders is hard work! Worth the effort, though.

We approach 3 of the 10 churches on the Unesco list and fully understand why they have been put under safety. From the outside most of them do not look astonishing, actually in some smaller cities one could walk next by and not notice what is hidden inside. The quality of the paintings and the small cities they are located... More

We are always on the look out to chalk up another UNESCO site so we made a real effort here. We went in October, so out of season and I think that was important. The churches are all small and I suspect many of them are now not used and if they are it will be a very specific times,... More

If you are visiting Kykkos Monastery then it is definitely worth visiting some of the painted churches along the way. They are all impressive. You will not be able to take photos.

In five weeks in Cyprus, we visited the following mountain monasteries. 1. Kyyko : overwhelmingly ornate interiors. Note the variety of chandeliers and the exquisite religious items in the adjoining room. The whole place though, suffers from over commercialisation and it's adjacent tourist carnival is just plain ugly. 2.Troodidissa: a gem. The drive here has stunning alpine scenery and you... More

Outside it is a curious barn with two roofs superseding each other. The reason for this odd building solution, which is reflected in the church’s name, is that the original roof construction had to be strengthened to avoid that it collapses in winter under the snow of the Troodos mountains. Inside, the small church is covered from floor to roof... More

Firstly, I am an expatriate resident of Cyprus and have frequently visited the UNESCO Listed Churches of Cyprus over the past 25 years. My most recent visit was last Thursday (19 Sep 12) to Ayios Ioannis Lampadistis Monastery and Ayios Nikolaos tis Steyis, Kakopetria. All I can say is that if you are in Cyprus then some all all of... The ten UNESCO designated churches (and many others) in the Troodos mountains are a wonderful treasury of Byzantine art and Christian tradition. However, in opposition to "2seagem" I would like to say that gold is not the predominant feature of the decoration, and that photography is banned! (it would also be useless in many of these little churches as they... More
