Not a normal museum experience, The Russian Tank in the lobby gave a hint to that....the museum was riginally used by the Arrow Party (Hungarian Nazi's) and then the Hungarian Communist Party to torture and execute disidents, political prisioners etc. A well thought out museum with a good flow, videos are english subtitled and all hand out literature is available... I visited the House of Terror a few weeks ago (June 2013). I had only heard about it while I was there in Budapest, but my friends had heard about it so I thought I'd go look at it. It was relatively cheap to get into the museum (1000Ft for students, and 2000Ft for adults). It was a self-guided tour... More

Originally i thought this museum would simply be an impersonal collection of pictures and letters. However it included films from families and survivors, similations, model rooms, demonstrations, hoards of detailed information. Not only did i leave completely informed about this period of Hungarian history, i was also moved emotionally and to be honest was very frightened because they manage to... More

I went to the museum full of expectation. It was a disappointment. I think they have excellent material and I think the owners of the museum have the best of intentions but they were not able to impart the information and history onto people. You walk from room to room but most of the rooms make no sense and I... More

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it (George Santayana). This museum gives one the opportunity to revisit some of the horrors of the past in Hungary. The exhibitions are well-done, and the cells in the basement, along with the old photographs of Nazi and Communist times are strongly evocative. The saddest part is the photos of... More

We visited the House of Terror since it had been recommended to us by a guide. It's the one attraction I wish we had skipped and had spent that time in the Museum of Fine Arts (which, by the way, is fabulous). The English translation is provided only on sheets of paper inside the door of each gallery. There are... More

Within easy walking distance of our hotel, this museum covered the Hungarian experiences with Naziism and Communism. Located on the site of the former Gestapo and Communist secret police headquarters, it provided a dramatic review of the impact of German and Soviet occupations and the workings of the secret police. While most of the info was in Hungarian, it was... More

This was a very well done and prepared Museum with both the history and the feeling of what it must have been like to been there during the communist and fascist times. My only recommendation is for the owner to unlock the fire exists as this creates a very unsafe environment for your guests.

We visited here just before leaving Budapest and so were a little short of time. A thoughtful, well presented and sensitive approach to the horrors that took place in Budapest and especially in this building. Take time to pick up the notes in each area which are in English and help to explain all the parts without English Sub titles.... More
