Mono Lake is a saline desert lake close to Yosemite National Park. After viewing the Tioga Pass area in Yosemite, we drove to Mono Lake. It's a short trip from that part of Yosemite. The lake is a beautiful unusual blue color and since it is so salty and alkaline, it's very different from the type of lakes you are... More

Very interesting landscape. I never saw something like the tufas before. You feel like on an other planet.

Check out the lake close up, on the south side. Beautiful area just below the outstanding Jeffrey Pine forest, and the unique calcium carbonara formations are cool

Although I 'm glad I finally visited this place on my wish list I was slightly disappointed. There didn't seem to be many of the classic tufas in sight. Maybe we were at the wrong part of the lake. There were plenty of Indian paintbrushes and a few other wildflowers blooming amidst along the boardwalk. Luckily the place was uncrowded... More

As photographers this is an amazing lake. Unfortunately, we were on a trip and couldn't take full advantage. The key would be to be there at sunrise and shoot it near the visitor's center before the winds come up and when lighting is right. But, that area is interesting even if you aren't an avid photographer. The deposits are amazing... More

Subtitle: (if you are a birder do not miss it!) Mono Lake is an experience like no other. It is a self contained lake with no rivers taking the water out toward the ocean. The water leaves by way of evaporation. There are remarkable formations of limestone like protrusions out of the water. These form because of fresh water coming... More

I had a difficult time rating this. I wish I could give it a 3.5, because it is certainly not average, and on a normal day, I would have rated checking out the Tufas on Mono Lake as an exceptional experience. Unfortunately, I was talked into cutting out a half-day hike in Tuolumne Meadows, when I originally planned to stop... More

Be sure to start out at the Visitor Center so you have an idea of the history and formation of the Lake. They have some helpful and very informed staff to talk with. Make sure you watch the 20 minute movie "Of Ice & Fire" - well worth the time! You'll have a great view of the Lake on the... More

There is a nice hike at the south lake tufa - daily fee may be required. On the north side is Mono County Park with a nice boardwalk and flush facilities and no charge. There is a great picnic area and a small creek flowing into the lake here.

Cruised over the Tioga Pass to the Eastern Sierra's. Had to see Mono Lake. Spent about 2 hours hiking the shoreline, checking out the Tufas. The place just seems a little alien. It's a must stop. Get here for sunset as the lighting from the lake changes at the light disappears. What I found so interesting was that so many... More
