I just love this street bordered with lots of trees and so many french colonial houses and the nice shops (even with the global luxury brands).

Considering we stayed in a hotel in this street helps a lot to use this as a starting point. Started with the opera house and walked towards notre dame cathedral and post office. Along the way, entered parksons and vincom b center to cool down from the summer heat. Along the way, we can see all the architecture. Weird to...

This street has been know as the Rue Catinat, in the days of the French, used to be a tree/cafe lined shady street, often a place for 'meetings' covering a range of activities. It degenerated in days of the Americans and renamed Tu Do, bars, shop, hotel,...
As Graham Greene fans, we wanted to walk rue Catinat in Fowler's footsteps. There has been some preservation of colonial buildings, but the march of the super mall can only be resisted for so long, and so the shiny temples of consumerism are sadly taking over. Known as Rue Catinat by the French, Tu Do Street during the American War, and currently as Dong Khoi. This street contains Vietnamese shophouses, French/art deco buildings, and modern monstrosities. Although I love the preservation efforts here, the shopping mall feel is fast-approaching and most shops are way too expensive for even most tourists.
Some really cool shops along here for decent art and crafts not just the tat you find at the markets and crummy souvenir shops. The big centres Parkson, Vincom etc are all clones of each other and mostly comprise international chain stores like Levi, Adidas, Lancome, Gucci etc, all fairly high prices. Some lovely looking buildings and a much nicer...

small shops near the city center with big hotels in front of it.. you have to haggle for the price if you want something to buy..and the price can fluctuate so much..depending on whose buying..even the one's selling coconut juice the price may vary from 1us in one corner and 2 us$ in the next corner.
Interesting area to look around. Not a cheap place for shopping as it is all high end upmarket. Worth a look though and very different to other areas in Ho Chi Minh City.
This street was very colorful and a really fun walk. I found some very very cute dresses, my mom found bags. There are some really expensive boutique stores. Lovely scarfs, vests, jewelry and crafts. But not the street to negotiate, this is for serious purchasing and if you can't afford it then some fun window shopping.
