Everything here is geared to making the visit an excellent one. Certainly worthwhile to get an understanding of how the locks work. Get there at 1:00 so you have time to see the museum and the video, then watch the ships pass through.

No trip to Panama would be complete without a vist to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center. Located inland from Panama City, it is a modern visitor's center. All in both English and Spanish. The 3D movie is worth seeing, as are the ships as they transit the canal, pulled along by the little train engines. The museum and book store...

I was a bit disappointed by the museum and the movie (not a must), which did not really explain much. I wished there were more about the recent enlargement of the canal and the new locks. But it is nice little visit. The must-do is the terrace, from which you can take time to watch the super-tankers get through several...

by this visitor center. Worth a stop but I wasn't as fascinated as I hoped I would be but I'm a nature person so maybe it was just not my cup of tea.
If you are in Panama city, you have to see the canal! We didn't know much about Panama before we visit the country, but everyone in Norway have heard about the Panama Canal ( and Panama hat)! This museum was a great overview of the canal and has a very nice area where you can overlook the locks and watch the ships come through. The overlook also has seats and is covered so you can just relax in the shade and enjoy. It really gives you a respect for how efficiently the locks are operated.
Is the best way to understand the incredible ingeneering that took place in making the Canal and also how it works.
The Panama Canal is fascinating and the museum here is a great tool to learn about the history behing this engineering marvel.
However, I found the whole Visitor Center experience to be a tourist trap. Everything is overpriced. The cab drivers try to charge you upwards of $50 USD one way to Panama City (just negotiate down. It should be...

See the locks work; gates opening and water rising. Museum is very interesting and don't miss the short documentary
Our timing was perfect - we saw a cruise ship, cargo ship and a tanker go thru the locks. We got there at opening and few people on observation deck.
