This was a delightful experience. It's a VERY steep, long climb, so halfway up I gave up and rode the "taxi," which was a horse, and well worth the money. I was told when planning the trip in another part of Guatemala that it was a live volcano, which it is, so I was hoping to see the lava flows.... More

Originally when my friend and I decided to hike the Pacaya Volcano we were going to pay $65 or $70 each for a tour that included private transfer, lunch and an english speaking guide. Some friends we met at our spanish school wanted to go with us but couldn't afford the high priced tour so they convinced us to book... More

I am sure the adverts tell you that you see rolling red lava and the like but you don't - at least we didn't. A very early start for very little reward. Don't believe them when they say it is any easy walk. Several young people in our group could not manage it and had to cough up for one... More

I hesitated to enclose my 'review' due to the request that it be derived from my own experience. However, I will be 70 next birthday so uphill climbing is not working well for me anymore. (hard enough on level ground!). Yet, both my children have gone and then went back with a guest, (my daughter's fiance). They raved about it... More

You have to find out before going if you are able to see and get close the lava rivers. Sometimes is possible and not dangerous I did it at dawn and arrived to the lava at night.... There are no word to describe it... Is simply beautiful... Is like feeling you are touching the center of the earth... WOW!!! Worth... More

This is great for a heart pumping hike as the incline for the first thirty minutes is pretty steep. Of course, you can always take one of the taxis (horses). Due to eruptions last year that killed a tourist, authorities are overly cautious now. You can't get close enough to see any lava. There were fumes rising from the caldera... More

I visited the volcano for a hike with a tour guide. The guide was nice, although he was on his phone a lot of the time. The people with horses follow you the whole way which is really annoying as they are right behind you and it is hard to enjoy yourself with them right up behind you. The friend... More

I hiked up pacaya through Guiness Travel and found the tour guide Holio to be great, knowledgable, and accomodating for everyone. I did the afternoon tour, which took about 1hr 40mins to get up, stopping very regularly so no-one was struggling - and to give us the opportunity to take in the views and learn about the volcano's history. We... More

Pacaya is a fairly strenuous hike - plan for three hours from the entrance (park office). A guide is recommended - about Q100 or $12-$13. Its possible to take a horse 80% of the way up. Its Q200 round trip or Q100 one way. Many take a horse up and walk down. Near the top its impossible for horses to... More

Pacaya Volcano is located on the south of Guatemala, the last big eruption was in 2010 the hike will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes my recommendation its to bring marshmallows so you can roast them at the ''kitchen'' that's the name that local guides used for a hole in the ground. Right now you can't see rivers of... More
