If you are doing other tours in the area I really don't think it's worth the 15TYL. Furthermore it's a bit annoying that to see the dark church it's an additional 8TYL (something that you don't know till you enter). It was bizarre that they didnt let you take photos inside of the frescos (without flash obviously) and yelled at... More

We walked to the open air museum from Goreme to see some cave dwellings. It was a cool experience. We had previously done the Green tour which gets you to an underground city and a monestary carved into the mountains. If you do the Green tour, the open air museum is not a 'must'. But if you dont do a... More

It is hard to know where to start - this is a unique piece of Orthodox Church history. It is well preserved and worth at least an hour - 2 of your time in Turkey.

Very cool way to see the cave churches and learn a little about the people who used and made the caves. We were fine without the audio tour but if you are interested in architecture or religion it might be worthwhile. The caves stay cool no matter what the weather outside (always 15-16C apparently) so they are a nice way... More

At first trial, we arrived at 10h45 and it seemed too late to avoid the many buses crowded with tourists coming to visit. We had better luck the second time when arriving at 9h30, even though we were not alone ! This site deserves a 2-hour visit and do not miss the "Dark Church" even though it requires an extra... More

This is a fascinating place with well-to-decently restored early Christian churches. Don't forget to check out the most important and elaborate of the churches which is on the way into the main complex. It's on the way back down to the parking lot and buses. Many people miss it or don't leave enough time for it, but it is the... More

We visited in the late afternoon which was best, after the tour buses had departed. Cannot imagine enjoying this experience in the crowds. It was pleasant just pottering among the various caves and churches at our leisure in a lovely photographic light. If your pension offers you a lift, take it. We didn't and it was a 45 minute walk... The place was good peak into the way how caves were made and used in the chimneys for people to live with all basic facilities like kitchen, wine making and drinking, bedrooms, common areas and paintings all over. There are detailed descriptions about most of the exhibits. However there is one catch, the entry to the museum is 15 TL... More

Very organized walkway. Photos are not allowed in the churches/chapels. If you are planning to go walking, very steep hill.

The Open-Air museum is an interesting place. We went right before they closed (per the recommendation of our hotel) and that was the right choice. There were virtually no crowds and we were able to see everything quickly. I paid the extra entrance fee to see the frescos and it was worth it for me.
