If you are in Matsuyama for the day I recommend that you buy a 400 yen a day pass for the tram.

At entrance, my japanese guide and I were greeted by a local volunteer guide. He toured us in Japanese, and my own guide translated. He was very kind, erudite, interesting. We really injoyed this.

The hike up to the castle is about 1 km, we came up the back side with a local friend. Our path is not for wheelchairs or strollers. If you have either in your group, take the sky tram up to the top. If you are there on a nice day take the chair lift back down.
It was quite hot when we visited, so we opted to take the paid transport to the top - it's 1000 yen for entrance to the castle and round-trip transportation. You can take either a chair lift (literally a chair with no restraint) or you can take the cable car. The alternative is a 20 minute walk through the park...

This is a beautiful castle on a hill top.Take the ropeway to get there. Inside the castle there is are interesting displays about the history. The views from the castle are really nice too.
Better than Matsumoto and Okayama. Bit of a hike to the top but well worth it
