- Travelbug1155San Francisco, California535 contributionsExquisite interior from the pastThe Green mansion is an amazingly opulent example of what a successful business person could accomplish in the late 1800s. From the outside the building looks rather unassuming but once you enter, the interior is rich with exquisite detailing from the tile floor to the carpet, beams and decorations. Each room has one of a kind furniture pieces, glass and wood sculpture, porcelain , along with artifacts from the period, And tells a rich story of what life might’ve been like for the privileged few. The experience far exceeds what you will see in the much more talked about Blue mansion. Do not miss this architectural wonder.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 March 2023
- Shawn G7 contributionsRich in history and culture of the PernankansIf you want to know about the culture and history behind Penang and the Straits Chinese, this is the place. Go for the guided tour, it is rich in explanation and fascinating background of the mansion and practices of the Straits Chinese - people who migrated in 100+ years ago and assimilated within the indigenous population and developed a sub-culture and heritage across a mix of races. The mansion is well restored by the current owner who obviously has paid a lot of attention to details and history. Likely the best attraction on Penang Island.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 April 2023
- Kevin PowerKuala Lumpur, Malaysia20 contributionsThe Kapitan's HouseholdAn impressive living history based on a private home, and a Peranakan cultural icon. This is my second visit and the team who carried out the restoration have to be congratulated. It really feels alive and I almost expect the Kapitan to majestically appear with his extended family. Always amazes me that the public can sit in the chairs and touch these artifacts.Visited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 April 2023
- Claire G9 contributionsAmazing Green MansionVery interesting and strikingly beautiful place which shines a nice light on Peranakan culture. Its full of lovely and interesting artefacts, from beautiful Peranakan ceramics, to beds, to clothes and textiles. The attached Jewellery museum is also impressive, and included in the ticket. The gift shop there has some lovely Baba Nyonya ceramics, and the staff there were friendly and helpful. A trip to Penang has to include a visit to this place.Visited June 2023Written 4 July 2023
- Sunita W6 contributionsA Penang GemThis beautifully restored mansion is an absolute must-see in Penang. It is part museum, part historical house, part treasure trove and completely enchanting. Go if you want to learn more about Peranakan history culture, or are simply interested in seeing extraordinarily beautiful objects in a glorious old house. If you can, please sign up for a guided tour. Our guide Francis skillfully linked past to present, humanizing the grand old house with stories of its inhabitants and highlighting artefacts that we might have otherwise missed.Visited July 2023Written 21 July 2023
- Angus StewartAuckland, New Zealand175 contributionsFantasticWe loved our visit here . Stepping back into another time in Penangs history was amazing and so glad we went here instead of the blue mansion as planned. That’s mainly a hotel now so this way so much better . We loved itVisited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 July 2023
- Safari037214958871 contributionWell kept, and has lots of history & heritage to offer!Very much worth a visit! It’s well kept, has A LOT of antiques, and there’s more to it than meets the eye (literally!) because there are other parts of the mansion that you might miss unless you join the guided tour. Our guide was Francis, who was very friendly, knowledgeable and took the time to answer all our questions. Shout out to Francis for telling the history of Peranakans & their culture very well, we could almost imagine what life would have been like in those times. 1000/10 would recommend! Price is worth the experience for sure.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 August 2023
- Carol TanSingapore, Singapore17 contributionsOpulent house of yoreWe were recommended to visit this mansion over the other famous one named after a color and were not disappointed. What a treat it was to see how the rich Peranakans loved in the past. There were lots of ornate furniture and treasures. I was wondering how come despite the size of the house, there were only 2 bedrooms. Perhaps the bedrooms were for show only. Be prepared to climb the stairs to the upper floor as there are no lifts.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 21 October 2023
- AngusPhuaSingapore, Singapore109 contributionsWorth VisitingThis was a really nice museum with very intricate design and items/furniture. It is mind-boggling to look at the opulence and how rich Peranakans used to live in the past. Must have taken lots of money and servants to maintain the entire place. I do think that some parts of the museum are over-curated - would be good to see some old preserved parts of the house instead. I am slightly taken aback by all the signs that say (in the tune of) "once broken considered sold". This makes it feel more like a shop than a museum. However, I think the overall experience was still pretty good.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 November 2023

This is a great way to spend a couple of hours understanding local history and customs from the last couple of hundred years. The artifacts and architecture are beautifully kept, so the experience was both authentic and interesting. The guided tour is free once you've bought your entry tickets - we were lucky enough to have the excellent Stanly as our guide; he's a real character!

This place is a tine machine that tells the compete story of the wonderful story of the varid Perankan peolples and thier multi-faceted cultures. The nonya ware collections are the best displayed in the world, and the detailed bead work, silks, batiks, wordworking, etc. are all amazing. Having the visiting lady guests rent the beautiful arrays of sarong and kebayas, and then pose in the mansion for glamour shots, really brings the Mansion alive, giving visitors a real feel of what like was like for the well-to-do of the 1920's.

As my tour guide mentioned 'History is the study of change over time, and it covers all aspects of human society'. If you abide by her statement, this place is definitely not history, but a distorted aspect of someone's perception of it. I think it's fair to say it's an assortment of antiquities collected from houses across Penang, placed in a mansion for the Instagram and Tik Tok influencers to play dress up. If that's your game, go for it. For everyone else, try Khoo Kongsi to get a better understanding of Penang's history.

A beautiful historical site and museum to visit. Joining a tour is a good way to go and then you can take some time to explore on your own as well if you'd like. Beautiful artifacts and architecture. Cash only admission for a single ticket.

I had an outstanding experience with Francis as my tour guide at the Peranakan Mansion. As a Malaysian Chinese descendant, it was really interesting. His wealth of knowledge and engaging storytelling brought the history of the mansion to life. Francis's passion for the subject and charismatic delivery made the tour truly enjoyable, leaving me with a deep appreciation for Peranakan culture. I highly recommend Francis for an enriching and memorable tour experience.

This ornate house is the perfect illustration of the Peranakans, the local Chinese community that has adapted to local Malay customs and traditions. The lavishly restored mansion offers a detailed look of a wealthy Peranakan family. After two centuries, the luxurious design and delicate furniture still impress every visitor. Well worth the 25 MYR admission.

The place was pretty nice though very little insight was provided to non-tour visitors. A bit too expensive in my opinion.

This place is amazing. Filled with historical facts about the Straits Chinese culture called Baba Nyonya. The displays of all the antiques were amazing and so beautiful. The historical building is pretty big and beautiful. This place is a must to visit when you’re in Penang! 5 Star! Photos doesn’t do it justice.
