Kitano Ijinkan (Kitano Street) is a part of Kobe that is known for being the location of several early 20th Century western houses. Satchi, our guide for the day, explained that, as a port city, Kobe became home to many foreign businessmen and dignitaries. They built stately homes for themselves on Kitano Street, which sits atop a hill that overlooks... More

Basically just a small area of old western settlement in the middle of Japanese neighborhood. There are less then 10 houses on display and they will charge for every single house if you wish to take a look inside (except for one house) and the charge is shockingly high for a simple, medium-sized English house. The hill is steep and... More

Nice area to walk around with many European-styled homes nearby the area. There is a small climb up the hill from the train station. There is this ticket-package to visit both house for 600 Yen. Don't bother to visit if you have been to Europe as there are just old furniture inside the homes- nothing special and definitely not worth... More

really nice area with a local, artsy touch. We didn't visit the European houses, but just enjoyed walking those little streets, stopping at boutiques and cafes. It helped to make Kobe one of the nicest stops on our Japan tour.

the kobe city loop bus will drop you off at the foot of kitano (get off at Ijinkan, not at Kitano Meister Gardens). a few steps down the street from the bus stop, there's a wide tiled path leading up to the weathercock house. there are lots of good spots for photos in that area. across the weathercock house is... We missed visiting this area last time in Kobe, so I was glad that we were able to do it this trip. We purchased a ticket to visit 4 houses as our time was limited. Panama, Britain, France and Ben's house. The houses were all interesting and each one different in their own way. It is worth the visit to... More

I simply loved walking around this area aimlessly. A lot of beautiful gardens and houses in this area. Some made me feel like I was in Amsterdam, some in other parts of Europe. The whole area gave a perfect backdrop to any photos. During the New Year celebration, the temples were packed with locals and tourists. Food galore, everwhere.

Interesting area and so well maintained. While at this place, one would have imagined being in Europe. Very lovely place for photography, cute little shops all along. The walk can be a little steep but well worth it. The flowers and plants are beautifully kept. Young japanese teenagers love this place and so did I.

The surrounding area of Ijinkan-gai is extremely beautiful. Buildings are all well preserved and organized. Good spots for taking picture.. It's even better visiting during low season when it's not packed with tourists..
