Having attended a performance of Verdi's opera Aida I returned with my Brazilian friend for a tour of the theatre the following week. There are several a day and the tours are organised for a group which is not too big. The fee is pretty nominal. It starts with a short video that describes in images more than words how... More

Although acoustics is not the very best, the building is fantastic and deserves a visit. It is more then 100 years, built when Rio´s downtown was very elegant.

Really beautiful theater. Excellent concerts and ballet. And of easy access, downtown Rio. Use the subway or taxi.

Beautiful... Architecture and decor from old times. If there is a concert or play going on I totally recommend.

Great guided tours. The theatre is amazing. Just make sure to get the ticket at least 1 hour in advance if you are going on a Saturday.

The architecture is stunning, with every one of its details. It was built in 1909 and has been restored, to rescue the golden original theater, they used thousands of sheets of 23 carat gold bought in Germany that adorn the facade and dome. "The interior of the theater is as luxurious as the facade, with sculptures and paintings, the nave... More

This is the Rio Opera house and it is just amazing. It is one of the architectural landmarks of the city of Rio and when downtown you must visit it. But don't go on a saturday or sunday as downtown is deserted and thus easier to get mugged.

This review is about watching a symphony concert at the theatre and not about touring the venue. We attended the GIUSEPPE VERDI concert on March 22, 2013. You can buy tickets online, but we decided to go to the Theatro Municipal the morning of the concert and buy tickets in person. There were still plenty of seats available for purchase.... More

Greta area - lovely views and architecture. Some excellent restaurants near by. Good to get an impression of colonial Rio for sure.

If you can get away from the beaches and the mountains, the Teatro Municipal is worth a visit. Best if you can get to one of the nearly free (R$1) Sunday concerts (typically 11 am) so you can see the interior and hear the acoustic.
