Okay, it's THE famous Copacabana beach, and yes, it's a wide beach, with bright, fine sand, surrounded by the beautiful nature of the city. BUT: the many buildings (private apartment buildings as well as some hotels) look rather run-down, and in strong need of renovation. We saw many apartments for sale or rent. The city has started to renew the... More

Copacabana is not just a beach - it's a landmark, a market, a gym, a fashion runway, the Babel Tower, a sports venue, a restaurant. With so much going on, don't expect to have a relaxing, quiet time on the beach reading a book or sunbathing. Experience the most famous beach in the world - it's truly different from everything... People here are very conscious of their looks. You see very few overweight people over here. On the beach the women are scantily clad wearing mostly thongs and a bikini top. You will not fit in wearing a bathing suit! Men of all ages run around in the speedos. Not only do these beach bums show off their attire on... More

This traditional beach shows everything visitors expect to see: great landscape, mild waves, happy people, voleyball and many other sports, a nice bike lane and many kiosks, where you can have lunch, or simply drink some beer. Highly recomended.

Quite nice board walk, water is really good, beach is good sandy, clean. Municipal staff regularly do their cleaning rounds. Felt quite safe walk around even after sunset, just be aware of your surroundings and don't do silly jewellery / fancy camera flashing sort of things. Lots of good restaurants around. Should be on the to do list. Lots of... More

Before we went to Rio we had read so much about Copacabana being run down and unsafe but that wasn't our experience at all. We walked along the wavy black and white promenade at various times of the day and never felt unsafe. The sand sculptures are amazing and the bars are great for people watching, often having live music... More

if your into fitness i highly recommend getting up early and getting to one of the exercise stations that are dotted along copacabana beach, working out whilst watching the sunrise is incredible and it wont be too hot, plus you can cool down in the sea straight after!

Actually I found that the ocean itself was pretty dangerous, with strong waves and strong undertow, so I didn't go too far in. Relaxing on the beach was better. I really liked walking on the sidewalk, with all the little bars. Most of the people are tourists, you'll hear all sorts of languages. It's more crowded on weekends. Felt safe... More
