The boat ride is an hour each way and costs 150 rupees for the return ticket (fixed price, so don't let someone sell you a ticket for more or let anyone charge you extra for the way back). The caves a really exceptional and not badly preserved. Beware of 'guides' selling their services for upwards of 400 rupees. A free... More

I truly believe this is one place that should not be missed. It is a pleasant half day excursion when you factor in the boat ride to and from the island. The carvings in the cave are beautiful, I can't imagine how beautiful they must have been before being partially destroyed. I highly recommend having a guide to explain the... More

I was overall very disappointed with Mumbai, but my trip to the caves validated the whole visit. A nice one hour boat trip out to the island and then the truly wonderful caves themselves. Note: I wore sandals and wish I'd worn walking shoes. Quite a bit of walking, over rough ground. NEGATIVE: Tourists are unashamedly ripped off. No wonder... More

Is worth the trip once you get to the island. Caves are amazing, although there is supposed to be free guides, not available. Try better to bring the Elephanta Guide Book, available in all bookshops in Mumbai. Bring water, hat and a towel, you will sweat a lot. Cleanliness 85%.

From Gateway of India, Mumbai, we took a passenger boat. Elephanta caves are about 11 km from the Gateway in an Island in the Arabian Sea, and one way it takes about 75 minutes. They charge Rs.150 (USD ~ 3) per head, two way ticket for a travel time of about 150 minutes in the sea and you can see... More

Elephanta caves can be reached only via an hour long ferry ride from the Gateway of India. the ride sometimes gets tiring, especially if its hot in the afternoon.Once you reach the island you are greeted with 100s of small shops selling petty items inclusing handicrafts, local jewellary, edibles, cold drinks and even clothes. There are about 10 restaurants as... More

The ferry ride is over a hour each way but worth the ride. The caves are rich with history and are beautiful. The gateway to india is right in the harbor.

Definety not the most amazing temple or ruin in India, but let's face it: you are in downtown Mumbai, and it's amazing having such a great place so close. The boat ride is pleasant, you will have the most photogenic view of Gateway of India and the Taj Hotel. Once there, go fast and avoid the tourist trap tents trying... More

A 2 hour boat ride ( to and fro) is really all that this is worth..the Caves are poorly maintained apart from the tonnes of garbage strewn around the entire island! Theres a vendor selling something to eat , wear or display every metre..they dont give a damn if their own stuff is flung on the ground before them. An... More

The ferry ride take 2 hours roundtrip. The caves take about 15 minutes to walk through a seemingly endless parade of shop stalls all hawking the same junk and 15 minutes to actually view the caves and statues within. You do the math.
