The Garrison Cemetery is a little hard to find - to the rear of the Temple of the Tooth and a little way up a track that passes a police facility. Signposting isn't brilliant. I disagree with the reviewer who commented "It's just a cemetery" - for this is a piece of colonial history and the graves speak of the... More

Beautifully maintained cemetery in Kandy managed by the CWGS. Situated beyond the lakeside and the national Museum. A place selected to rest the bodies of the British colonists.

I didn't meet the guide so maybe he's who makes the difference. Was expecting the gravestones to describe all manner of demises as suggested by reviews but the one's I saw just provided the normal info I've seen in English gravestones. Ie birth, death, name and age. In Victorian times, dying young wasn't uncommon so wasn't too surprised to see... More

We found it both fascinating and sad to read the inscriptions on the tomb stones. So many young soldiers helping to maintain the British Empire in the Victorian era came out to Sri Lanka to serve their country and died from malaria and dysentery, most of them under the age of 25 years. Those, mostly officers, who were older and... More

Up a small hill behind the big Buddist Temple of the Tooth is a small, well kept colonial cemetary which gives an interesting insight into the lives & deaths of the British in Ceylon around 200 years ago & how young many of them were when they died, with both male & female family members. Well worth an hour out... More

The Garrison Cemetery was a lovely little colonial find. It was very well cared for and the staff were very eager to help. The grave stones are interesting and there is a nice museum as well. Enjoy!

This is a thought provoking insight into the lives and deaths of those young people who came to Sri Lanka in the early days from the UK (England and 'North Britain'). It is tidy and carefully maintained by Mr Charles Carmichael and his assistant. Mr Carmichael is the grandson of a Scottish settler and an Indian lady. His knowledge is... More

This is an incredibly atmospheric small cemetary only a few minutes walk from the lake. The caretaker and his grandson are very informative. We 'popped in' for a short visit and emerged a couple of hours later. Don't miss the small chapel and please leave a donation - we saw a couple of other very neglected and overgrown cemeteries in...
