A quiet beach, good for swimming but the midday sun is very hot. Beach best in morning and afternoon.
The beach itself was nice, lots of sodas nearby and the beach was clean and did not feel unsafe. Let clothes on the beach while swimming and didn't seem to much of a issue. It was hard to find entry points to the ocean from where we were at due to coral ... (Ouch)
Puerto Viejo has several reef protected beaches just meters from open air restaurants, bars, and super markets. Truly, no parking to deal with, you can walk from your hotel or chain your bike to the nearest palm tree. Grab a sarong, a book and just chill.
I so much wanted to like this place. My friend and I went in Sept. 2012. Won't name hotel. We had everything we owned stolen from our room. They broke in while we went out to dinner. Nice and quiet, not super touristy or crowded which is what I like. Beautiful at night too. Very cool old barge makes for interesting scenery. Saw a couple of baby stingrays so may pay to be careful. Lovely clear water and very warm

Yup, lots of garbage, with dogs roaming and pooping in the sand. We were nervous walking the area. Garbage needed pickup and there were unbearable orders due to rotting garbage.
Beautful if away from downtown, and the beach town is interesting, but there was garbage piled everywhere on the beach, I kept expecting the commercial with the American Indian guy in the canoe with a tear in his eye from when I was a kid.
Liked: - clean sea - good location - perfect eating and time outing possibilities Disliked: - nothing
