I visited Poas as part of a combo tour that also went to the Doka Coffee Plantation and La Paz Waterfall Gardens (my review of La Paz is already up and the one for Doka will be coming soon). I really enjoyed the visit to the volcano. The crater is very cool to see and will give you some nice... More

It doesn't have the perfect symmetry of El Arenal, but how many times in your life do you expect to be able to look down into the steaming crater of a volcano?

We lucked out and got a sunny day to view the volcano. The photos I had seen here really don't convey the huge scale of the crater, but once you see a geologist or two below you understand how awesomely huge the smoking crater is. We visited on an Expediciones Tropicales day tour with La Paz Waterfall Gardens and the... More

After a 1 hour bus ride from Alajuela we visited volcano Poaz. Try to visit as early as possible, before the clouds and the tourist groups roll in... The park is not that large; you will be able to do all trails and see everything in half a day. Nice souvenir shop onsite.

The day we were here, the clouds were very low so we couldn't see the volcano but enjoyed the hike trail around that area and the beautiful cloud forest vegetation.

The view was fantastic and I was very fortunate that the mist cleared for me to be able to take lots of photos!

Going up thru the trails to reach the crater is a challenge to your lungs, need to make some stops for adjusting your breathing affected by the altitude, after a while you are in the top enjoying an amazing view of the crater with the clouds of smoke coming out letting you know the power and strength of nature, There... A trip up the Poas Volcano is a worthwhile experience. After winding through small villages up the side of the volcano, you reach a small parking area at the foot of a broad, paved path leading to a dramatic overlook of the volcano's crater. Billowing clouds of steam an smoke swirl in the wind inside the volcano eventually reaching the... More

We really loved Poas and it was an easy hike in terms of difficulty, although we were both affected by the altitude. We're in good shape, but it took a little time for our lungs to adjust, so we were breathing heavily at the start. As long as you take your time, anyone should be able to do the hike... More
