A surprising number of interesting sights are within walking distance of Hanga Roa, where you almost certainly will be staying. Just walk north of town along the coast. The beauty here is that sunset photos are easily gotten. There are Moai, ancient gardens, boat ramp, chicken coop, and house foundations. In addition the museum is close by. In an afternoon... More

When we first walked into Hanga Roa we thought the Moai at Ahu Tahai couldn't be real because they are so close (within) the actual settlement. It was our first Moai experience. But they are real, and they are gorgeously sited above the sea. It is best to visit this site in the morning when the light is on the... More

Ahu Tahai is a must see and it is so close to town it is easy to get to. You can even walk from town to this site. The Moai are not as impressive as some of the others but what is more important is the back of the Ahu and the boat ramp. It is the only ancient boat... More

I went first thing in the morning, and it was lovely to see Tahai with no one around. However, I went back in the evening to watch the sunset. Even with 60 people around to do the same thing, it's an out of this world experience that shouldn't be missed.

This site has a modest number of moai but it also has the foundation of one of the village houses so it reveals that the moai tended to be erected close to the sea but facing inward toward the village. The foundation of the house is quite unique, having the fusiform shape of a cigar, an oval with tapered ends.... More

Most of the moais were put down during the revolution of the years 1700 in the Easter Island. The moais here were restaured and you can see a moai with eyes, that are not exactly original but it show the sensation the people had at the moais were everywhere in the Island . Besides the moais , this placa has... More

A completely restored moai with the white eyes and a group of smaller moai partially restored. Perhaps the most interesting thing here is the dock area where you can see how they got boats in and out of the water without much in the way of beaches on the island.

Although this site has only six moai, the visitor sees the original boat ramp, a statue with coral and obsidian eyes, and one with a red stone topknot. Additionally, Mulloy, the scientist who found and restored many of the statues on Easter Island is buried nearby.

Quiet and peaceful, close to the small museum, we visited the site several times as it was close to where we stayed.

There are three ahu here with standing Moai. It is very close to the city (about 20 min walking) and you can enjoy the Sun setting behind the statues.
