Awful - misleading websites refer to this (Downton section) as an Oasis - it is NOT - it is a dirty, dangerous "abandoned by the city" urban dumping ground. We walked the entire 2.1 Mile length, no part was clean and well-kept and the homeless have taken over - doesn't feel safe (although we were not bothered or approached by anyone), roaming dogs - you name it! We did not see any other "trail walkers" for two hours and worryingly absolutely no families with children - if people won't take their children to a park or trail than that's lost to the city. No signs at all of any recent clearing of trash on the shores or in the river. The picture shows a homeless person taking over a picnic area. Please note: I understand that homelessness is a complicated issue - and I do not have any answers.

It was a decent trail (past tense).
Unfortunately, it has become collateral damage in California's homeless problem and has become overrun.
Aside from being an eye sore, it is unsafe.
I recently attempted to use a portion of the trail that looked safe to avoid cars on a busy overpass, but was chased down by a pair of unleashed dogs. It is a miracle I wasn't bit.
To add insult to injury the San Jose homeless concern hotline will not answer your calls and their voicemail is full. Nor can file a complaint with the police. They will not accept it. Their only suggestion was to file a complaint directly with city counsel.

The idea was there, but the vision appeared to stop after the landscaping. It's dangerous along that trail. Miles of it are laced with trash, tents and the homeless who deserve better care than being relegated to living under freeways, using the river to bathe and defecate. My kid asked to never go back.

This trail begins downtown SJ (near Adobe) and goes well over 10 miles down (south) to end in Alviso. It is VERY flat with only a few rollers as you ride UNDER highways and streets. Lots to see, but not too much shade. Restrooms located at one park 1/2 way (look for the play area and climbing area near high-end apartments. And restrooms located at the Alviso marina.

This is underwhelming urban park with lots of potential to be great. Some public art is up, rose garden in need of TLC. Amid COVID, people walk and bike the trails. Upkeep is low and trash, debris around the area. Albert, great place to walk and connects to parts of downtown.

I’ve given this trail quite a few tries in the past two years, each time hoping it might improve, but each time I’m encouraged to avoid it due to the homeless that are increasingly encroaching very near and often onto the actual paved trail. They’ve cut fences to gain access and the city shamefully seems to be encouraging encampments by adding portable toilets along the trail. This is better than having them crap and urinate on the trail, but a depressing way to deal with homelessness. These people need rehab, cleanup in dignity, and vocational training/placement, not encouragement to continue their drugged up life style along the trail. When I go for a ride I prefer a nice setting because that’s why I ride, not a depressing 3rd world experience in the heart of the dying Silicon Valley. Shame! There are still sections of the trail that are beautiful, but you have to ride through increasingly bad sections of hell.

We took a walk on Guadalupe River trail. Its also a biking trail. There are various things to see along the way. There are some homeless in the area. Overall, we had a good time.

Staying at the Hilton across the street in San Jose and decided to go for a run. It looks like this was a nice trail at one time, follows a creek with numerous terrace/seating areas. Not any more. The city has given the trail to the homeless. Numerous tents/camps, garbage (and worse) everywhere. All of the terraced areas overgrown with weeds. Not safe. Sad that the city would let it deteriorate like it has.

I went biking over there and as usual I was confronted by so much garbage and some very dubious looking people. One man leered at me and made a move to block my path. I think san jose needs to take back the park and clean it up and patrol it. Frightening

A good easy bicycling and walking place, not enough so to attract many out of town visitors. Bike rentals come and go.

I'm new to the area. Is this trail dog friendly? My dog and I are from Boulder Colorado so we are looking for a nice trail to be out & about. I'd also be interested in hearing of other dog friendly trails. She's off lead trained but I understand sometimes trails require a lead to be attached at all times. 😕 Thank you for your comments & recommendations.

This is a dog friendly trail but your pup will need to be leashed as it is heavily used by cyclists, runners, roller bladers etc. There are numerous trails in the Bay Area. For Instance, the Alameda Creek Trail runs from Fremont to the Bay. The dirt side is very dog friendly and they can be off leash. The Stevens Creek trail runs from Mountain view to East Palo Alto.
Enjoy the trails.
