Amelia Island has a very long and complicated history of ownership. Once you learn the background at the museum, you will understand the contrasts that make the island so interesting.

We missed the docent led tour of the museum but even so, it was very interesting . A small but well laid out museum with highlights of the history of the area. Glad we went -it gives you a different perspective of the place. They have good print base materials for self led tours of historic buildings in the community....

A good place to visit to get the history of Amelia Island and Ferdandina Beach. If you like museums, you need to stop here.
This is a quaint little museum in the old island jail, and it's a great starting point for any trip. The staff were very helpful, and you get all the brochures you find at the welcome center at the train depot but you also get a more informed staff.
This is where you book guided walking tours and a "Pub...

This museum is so worth the visit. We learned so much about the local history that was unknown to us. The area has a compelling civil war history that is presented either with a docent tour or self guided and either way you will be impressed with the displays and the information. Great for kids too a lot of hands...

My husband and I are history buffs so we go to museums every time we travel. Amelia Island Museum of History didn't disappoint. The history of the island is quite unique and truly interesting. Everyone working there is friendly and knowledgable. Take a tour to learn more about this precious island.
We started out trip here and got a nice overview so when we walked around town and took the trolley tour, we already had a good background.
This museum houses so much history, it's hard to believe! The tour guide was extremely knowledgable and entertaining too. They recently added a permanent children's exhibit - built a boat inside the musuem! - that is fantastic for kids of all ages. A+++++
It was very good for the size of the musuem and was very informative. The staff was nice and very a joy to talk too.
