Our fantastic, thoroughly knowledgeable tour guide, Sylvia, really brought the home's history to life and used the very well-planned room layout to ease into a natural telling of the inhabitants' stories over time (rather than a blah "here's this room, here's that room"). She reminded me of a great tour guide at Nottoway, Tessa. Both are very classy ladies who... More

We visited this plantation not long after the owners decided to start tours. As we are from south Louisiana, we have toured many of River Roads finest homes and have heard the stories of the all. Given these early days of being open this plantation was sadly well overdue for some TLC and as the tour guide & one of... More

I can't say that other plantations offer a more authentic look at the life of a sugar-growing family, but I can say that several others had the look of a historic home-turned theme park. St. Joseph's was well maintained but not glitzed up like others we passed and drove into. And again, while I can't comment on other guides, I... More

The family still owns this home and the run it themselves. Its very interesting what has been done to the home in the past. One of the best things about this is that they still have alot of the cabins, tool shed, out house, outdoor kitchen along with other buildings right on site that you can walk into. Also it... More

This plantation is family owned and sometimes family members conduct the tours. It has been in the hands of the current family for over 135 years and is still a working plantation. It is not one of those crowded, cattle-drive type tours. In fact, my friend and I were the only ones on our tour, so we really had our... More

We toured Oak Alley and Houmas House plantations and saw San Francisco, St. John's, Destrehan and few more. Stop for a picture and skip the tour. Go to Houmas

It took about an hour. Thought it was kinda pricey for that. Overall, it was a great experience. I would recommend it.

I was surprised that this plantation, while seemingly not as grand as some others, is better and more authentic. The tour guide was wonderful, knew her history well and really took her time with us answering all questions. This is a working plantation still in the family and sometimes family members give tours or are working there which adds another... More

The tour at St. Joseph Plantation was terrific. The brochure really doesn't do it justice. The place is beautiful and so authentic. The tour guide really brought the history to life and made us feel right at home. I enjoyed every minute and I'd love love to tour it again on my next trip to New Orleans.
