The 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse is an amazing piece of Chesapeake Bay history. It's my understanding that the "spider legged'' (eight legged screw pile) lighthouses are unique to the Chesapeake Bay. The original Hooper Straight lighthouse, erected as a marker to the mouth of Tangier Sound in 1867, was destroyed by shifting ice on January 11, 1877. Rescue efforts for... More

Living on the Great Lakes and growing-up on the ocean, I have been to many lighthouses and enjoy them as historic treasures of a past, maritime way of life. Despite visiting many historic lighthouses, I had not had the opportunity to visit a screw-pile lighthouse such as this one located on the grounds of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and... More

This is a great experience to really see what a real lighthouse is like, you can actually go in and climb to the top for a glorious view of the Chesapeake Bay. There are also many maritime museums and shops and restaurants to enjoy on this fun filled trip.

Really enjoyed learning about what life was like on these lighthouses. Some of the exhibits were showing their wear, but it didn't interfere with the learning. I loved going all the way to the top!

The view from the top of the lighthouse is worth the climb. It was nice to see how they actually lived inside.

Liked the displays showing how life was like living in this lighthouse. can't imagine living here. Loved the cleverness of the red glass and how it showed ships how to avoid danger.

My wife and I visited St Michaels, Md in June. During our stay, we visited the Maritaime Museum where the lighthouse resides. We enjoyed being able to actually enter the lighthouse and see the representation of the quarters of where the crew actually stayed. The view from the top was actually pretty amazing as well.
