The Community follows a daily rhythm of prayer including Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours (sung in Gregorian chant). Constructed of Minnesota limestone, and designed by William Rawn Associates of Boston, the Church of the Transfiguration is a contemporary expression of an ancient 4th century style of architecture, and recounts the story of salvation through mosaic and fresco images, bronze, glass, and stone sculpture. The organ is a restoration and expansion of pipework from twelve organs built by the E.M. Skinner Organ Company in the early 20th century.Sunday Eucharist -- 11:00am (winter); 9:30am (summer)Weekday Vespers -- 5:30pm Saturday Choral Evensong or Vespers -- 5:15pm TOURS -- Monday - Saturday at 3:00pm Organ demonstrations -- Fridays at 3:30pm Priory Books & Gifts -- Monday - Saturday 10am - 6pm(Wednesdays the Church is closed) « less

Definitely make time to see this most interesting church....you will not see another one like it. Real frescoes and real mosaics....the whole church is stunning in every way. Indescribable. You will not believe this is exists where it is...surrounded by beautiful grounds. If you are truly lucky, there may be a concert scheduled when you are in town. Magnificent organ.... More

We were delighted with the tour of this building and the story of this Community of Jesus -- an ecumenical community with celebate men, celebate women, singles and married couples, some with children. The building and the story of how it was designed is fantastic. Wish we could have stayed to hear the 12,000 plus pipe organ. I understand it... More

We made two visits here, one for Sunday mass, and one for a tour of the church. Both were outstanding in every dimension. The members of the community were uniformly welcoming, knowledgeable, and solicitous. The church itself is beautiful, the service moving, and the bookstore absorbing. The tour added another degree of delight to the experience. This was truly one... More

This is not simply a church, it's a great, ecumenical community of brothers and nuns who've been living and working together since the late 60's. They have adorned their church with SENSATIONAL mosaics and frescoes. Make sure to have a friendly member of the community take you around to explain the stories behind all the art -- both the religious... More

The hidden gem is worth a visit on Rock Harbor in Orleans. The art and mosaics in the church are worth seeing. There is a related bookstore on site too.

Visit the Church for the love of art alone...it is remarkable. You will be shown around with no pressure what so ever to get involved in the church. It is so beautiful and really worthwhile a visit.

Having read about this church in a national magazine,we wanted to see it for ourselves. Built in 2000, this church is in the style of a Roman basilica, with fabulous mosaics and murals set within a lovely courtyard in this modern Benedictine monastic community. Visitors are welcomed at a shop that sells food products, scented candles and books. Check the... More
