The railway was located about 6 miles off US 302 over a well-signed and unevenly paved road. Parking was in a large compact-dirt lot. Early on a clear crisp fall day, for $66 per adult ticket, an antique steam locomotive pushed our railroad car along steep railroad tracks and up a 3-mile-long trestle to Mount Washington’s 6,288-foot summit. During our... More

My wife and I visited Mt Washington during our recent vacation at the White Mountains. We had wanted to drive but the auto road up to the summit was closed and took the cog rail instead. On what was a perfect day, 70’s and cloud free, the trip soon turned into a huge disappointment despite paying $128. The staff at... More

What a hoot! What was once considered a laughable idea by some and an impossible feat by others, now provides visitors an experience of a lifetime – one to add to your “bucket list”. For more than a century, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway has climbed the tallest mountain in the Northeast, experienced the world’s worst weather and persevered through... More

As the cog train carries you higher & higher, up the increasingly steep track, over high and turning trestles, you begin to realize why this railway is a feat of engineering. You are not only on a historic trip, riding on the first cog railway; you are also climbing above the treeline into the clouds to a place of spectacular... More

This is a must see. Although it is a bit pricey, $62 p/p, do not cheap out on this one. The views from the COG are second to none. The tour guide is full of information and explaining the history. The closer you get to the top the colder and windier it becomes. Be sure to bundle up as I... More

On top of Mount Washington, the visibility was maybe ten feet. Similar experience on the cog railway about halfway up. On a crummy day, don't bother.

Its like travelling back in time with those old locomotives on age old tracks and lot of history and heritage behind these locos. We loved it

This was the first mountain climbing cog train in the world. Building began in 1866 and the 1st excursion to the top was 1869. The railway was designated a National Historic Engineering Landmark. The story goes that Sylvester Marsh designed and built the cog railway after he and a friend climbed the mountain. They were caught in a terrible storm... More

We visited the Mount Washington Cog Railway on our trip to New England. We like to try various rail rides wherever we travel and this one sounded intresting. Unknown to us when we booked the tickets (very easy online--better than driving all the way there to find they are sold out---which I understand happens during the busy seasons!) I did... More
