Drove through on our way from Ocracoke to Beaufort. Beautiful scenery along the way. Didn't stop anywhere along the route, just enjoyed the view along our route.
Although the refuge was closed because of the government shutdown, a nature trail around Willow Lake was open. The best thing about the trail was a duck blind that overlooked the lake. If you decide to go here in the summer, make sure you have LOTS of mosquito spray. This place is right in the marshes of Cedar Island, and the mosquitoes will drave you crazy. If you can stop swatting long enough to look for wildlife, you may see lots of birds.
This refuge sits on the northern end of the southern outer banks next to the dock for the ferry to the northern outer banks. My daughter and me are into horses and nature, so the perfect place to experience is cedar Island. Love it in the summer.
