Everywhere we went we saw signs that we were either entering or leaving the Deschutes Forest. There are plenty of things to see, from a multitude of exotic buttes to lava tubes. There are waterfall hikes and overlooks galore.

What a huge variety of activities you can enjoy in this forest! There are: mountain biking trails, horseback riding trails, snowmobiling trails, hiking trails, lakes, fishing, trout streams, sailing, and on and on! We love it.

Sadly most areas of the forest were closed at early spring time we were there, roads not plowed, etc.--so could not see camp ground areas or attractions. But the forest is beautiful and serene as well as the many lakes and rivers you can see from the road. Can't wait to go back in the summer and do some exploring.

We skied for three days on three different areas and still could not take in all the terrain available for cross-country skiers and snow-shoers. The warming huts with their warm wood stoves are a great stop and destination for backcountry. The terrain is excellent for beginners and intermediate skiers.

Right now the forest sleeps, dormant under snow, ice and grey skies. The days are winter short, and just now slowy getting longer towards the Solstice in five months. The Golden Mantle Ground Squirrels that my Shepherds love to chase are asleep in their burrows. In the higher elevations winter sports are being pursued by outdoors enthusiasts: snowmobiles, dog teams,... More

It is a open, easy to walk in forest with a grand variety of plants and animals. In addition are many lakes for numerous fishing opportunities. One can run the rapids on the Deschutes River, hike broken top, the three sisters or Jefferson Mountain. There are day hikes, multi-day hikes and the sky-line trail. Weather during the summer can be... More

The gentleman at the Nat'l Monument Visitor Center was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He gave us maps and suggestions on how to spend our day hiking. Just a beautiful area despite some smoke coming from the Sisters range fire. The history of how Paulina and East lakes were formed as well as the obsidian flow is very interesting. Bring good... This is a BIG place, with many different bio-habitats (see other reviews). You can stay on paved roads and just hit the marked hot spots, or go to more remote areas on dirt roads or by hiking/horseback/biking. Birding, fishing, photography, skiing, motorized sports in some areas, hunting..you name it. Designated wilderness areas for solitude are especially valuable in this area.... More
