A very informative historic attraction, actually the first settlement the British had in the New World. On Saturdays there are demonstrations of musket firings, or cannons, along with explanations of how it was done at that time. Also they have a reproduction ship you can go on. There's also a natural habitat zoo, and plenty of places to walk, bike... More

Under advertised little gem. It's a really nice, inexpensive getaway from downtown. You are on an unsupervised tour and it's beauty is as nice as some of the other plantations for 1/3 or more of the price. Definitely see a popular plantation, but this is very nice too.

My husband and I went to Charles Towne Landing on a whim one Saturday and it was one of our most memorable dates we've had here in Charleston. It was a beautiful day, we had our dogs with us, and it happened to be a day they were firing the cannons (I think they only do this a couple times... More

This is a wonderful afternoon getaway! Perfect for families, or even first dates. Parking is close. There are beautiful gardens, facinating exhibits and lovely walking paths.

There is very little left of the original Charles Towne Settlement, but this State Historic Park gives you a good understanding of what it was like and why this location was picked.

In a way it is one big fake, They have reconstructed the earthwork/fencing barrier in places (they know pretty accurately the course of this from the ditch and post traces). However, nobody has yet found a single trace of a building from the period (and it only had a life of ten years anyway, after that they all shifted to... More

If you're looking for a break from lovely historical houses and city streets, head out here for a relaxing walk in the woods. I wouldn't classify it as exciting, or jam-packed with a lot to do and see, but if you want a couple hours of refreshing natural beauty with lots of shade, it's delightful. The park rangers are very... More

This is a state park, very reasonably priced at $7.50 per adult (and discounts are available, through AAA or, even better, a coupon. This park is located on the site of the original settlement. The settlers moved to the current site of Charleston about 10 years after the original settlement was established. This park contains of lot of good information... More

One of the best days we’ve spent in the Charleston area was visiting the Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site near the Ashley River. Here English settlers landed in 1670 and founded the Carolinas colony. This is a great multi-generational experience but with 80 acres of gardens alone it’s huge! Kids can run off a weeks steam without disturbing anyone.... More
