I have backpacked the park a couple of times now and it is one of my favorite parks here in the southeast. Last time we backpacked in it was a heck of a snow storm the whole time (winter weather can get very unpredictable up there- just a heads up). We decided to leave early one day because of snow... I was taken on a hike by family members that are experts in this. We took three children and some inexperienced adults like myself. We walked the Rhodonderon trail and a part of the Appalachian trail. The kids had a great time after running into a small pack of friendly wild ponies and the rest of us completed the climb... More

Our family visits lots of state parks on day trips and this is by far the best. In NC we have never had to pay admission like we did here, but I guess you get what you pay for. Don't miss the overlook near the top at the office....a breathtaking view. Definitely worth the drive.

We camped and hiked this gorgeous park and the nearby Mount Rogers National Rec area. The trails are perfect for hiking. The wild ponies are beautiful. You won't find mountain hiking this awesome anywhere else in Virginia. The trails are very rugged though, so be prepared for major hiking. There is a beautiful waterfall located along the Cedar Creek trail.... More

Quite possibly one of the most beautiful backpacking trips I've done east of the Rockies. My wife and I took our 4 year old son and did a 2 night/3 day trip of 10 miles. We were greeted by ponies within the first 50 feet of our hike, the balds offered incredible views, and we were often hiking along with... More

We visit here every year. One of our favorite places! It is a "must see". You won't regret it. Numerous trails. Plenty of picnic areas. Camping. Blueberry picking. Wild ponies. Gift store. Country store.

We spent a few days at the campground. There is so much to do around this park that we only touched on a few things. There were programs every day for children of all ages. There are wild ponies to see, trails to hike, rivers, bike trails , etc. I can't wait to come back. The only downfall was no... More

Grayson Highlands State Park is one of the best we have visited. The views are spactacular from the visitors center and even better if you will take the 1 1/2 mile loop trail "twin pinnacles". You should be aware that the EASY grade that is used to describe the trail does not include the boulder crawl that you have to... More

We started our hiike to Mt. Rogers from Massie Gap. This is a spectacular hike which is wide open with spectacular views. We were also fortunate to see the wild ponies that are famous for roaming this area. The park service uses them to clear the grassy balds. I would strongly recommend this hike: http://www.hikinginthesmokys.com/mount_rogers.htm
