The Zoo was a bit depressing. I assume it is a lack of funding and possible mis-management. There are some nice exhibits and all school children get admitted with their classes for free, so they are trying. It was an OK outing, but the area can be well covered in less than 2 hours.

This zoo has been renovated recently. The walkways are all wooden and easy to walk on. They are all handicap excessible and they are all raised so that you are looking down into the habitats which makes viewing the animals so much better. The gift shop was well stocked. We were going to ride the train but the lightening stopped... More

I've been to the zoo many times. It has come a long way since I was a child and seemed to peak about 5 years ago. Since then it seems to have started going down hill. It almost looks like they are trying to grow too big, too quickly. If you go there before noon, you will be hard-pressed to... More

Elephants were rocking back and forth by the gate for extended periods. The Virginian-Pilot reported on March 13, 2013 that the Virginia Zoo routinely beat their elephants with a bullhook for over 10 years, and just recently stopped this cruel practice because a Zoo Volunteer complained. A biologist friend told me the rocking back and forth is abnormal behavior that... More

We headed to the Norfolk Zoo yesterday. There was a lot of construction within the zoo which made navigating a little hairy. However, there were many volunteers walking the paths and that made all the difference for our group. We were two moms with kids ranging from K to 5th grade and, since we home school, we had an activity... More

I had gone to the zoo about 5 years ago and was not impressed decided to give it another try, while the zoo is nicely laid out, there really are not many animals to see and some of the animals I felt sorry for especially this Ocelot that kept pacing and pacing in circles in the night exhibit felt so... We took our young grandkids (6 and 2) here, and they thoroughly enjoyed seeing the animals, and interacting in some venues. Food is what you would expect (fast food fare), but you can take snacks in. Plan on spending at least two hours here to be able to see everything.

This is a great zoo. It is not as big as some other zoos I have been to in other cities but for what they have they do a great job. The exibits are interesting and the views of the animals are good. The staff was very friendly.

Enjoyed the visit. A bit chilly so some animals not outside but that was the only disappointment. Train ride was entertaining. Volunteer at giraffe area very knowledgable.
