Great shows contributing to our past history. Get a glimpse of the past and how people lived while contributing to the arts. These people work hard long hours to be so good on stage!
We live in Beckley and have had the pleasure of seeing both the ongoing productions of "Hatfields & McCoys" and "Honey in the Rock". They are both wonderful historical musical dramas and great entertainment to boot.
We have also seen "Rocket Boys" the musical which is based on Homer Hickam's book of the same name and the movie, "October Sky"....

Honey in the Rock is good theatre. McCoys and Hatfields is NOT. To have Johnse Hatfield break out into a Broadway type love song is just absurd (snickers by many in the audience) and Devil Anse is portrayed more as a cartoonish backwoods hick/Randall McCoy fares much better. Went with high hopes that were quickly dashed.
Sit up close to the stage, if you go there for an outdoor show. Everyone is very friendly, the actors come out in the audience and talk with the guests before the show.
We have so muchn talent in WV, I have been to the Theatre WV about 5 times, and I never get tired of seeing the shows. My personal favorite: The Hatfields and McCoys, you will not regret it! Helpful hint: in the evening time, it gets chilly, bring a jacket or a small jacket.
Honey in the Rock is absolutely amazing!! It tells the story of the Civil War and focuses mainly on how West Virginia became independent from Virginia. Many people may think it sounds boring, but it is NOT!! Romance, drama, suspense, and "bust-a-gut comedy" keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time! There is never a dull moment....

Small outdoor amphitheater was very entertaining. Snack bar with hotdogs, popcorn....the usual movie theatre fare. Saw musical play about the Hatfields and McCoys which portrayed factual events that occurred in this region. It's cold up there in the mountains at night so be sure to bring a coat and/or blanket.
We had tickets to see a show a friend's daughter was in and went with family. We got our seats, purchased some food and sat through some ridiculous opening speeches and dances. The show ended up being canceled because an actor couldn't get there and there was no understudy. We were told our tickets could be used another night, so...

I love the theatre and it's so wonderful. There are at least 3 shows that they put on 2 regulars and 1 that changes from year to year.
