Driving east from Charleston you will pass through coal country, which is scenic in its own way. Then you drive along a very serpentine trail w/mountains and gorges/rivers on either side. A taste of this beautiful state.

Good alternate to Int 64. Lots of small towns. Lots of curves! In need of repaving. If you're not pressed for time, this is your way to go.
My best friend and I took a day trip and drove the entire scenic trail. It was absolutely gorgeous. I love taking scenic drives and this is one of my favorites.
From Charleston, it takes a while to get away from industry but you will find a lot of interesting stops along the way. Beware the curves in the highway. Visit Fayetteville and travel south from there to see what mountain living is really like.
Breathtaking panoramic views, State Parks, waterfalls, dams, country stores. What more could you ask for? Highly recommended!
We ride our Harley on this road quite often and there is some beautiful scenery. We always pass a lot of other bikes. Some nice little towns along the way, with little diners serving home cooked food.
Slow down your trip between New River Gorge and Charleston and see the amazing views. It was also fun to drive. We had sun roof open and windows down and it was awesome. Were hesitant to spend the time in getting home but it was more than worth it!
We took my sister and brother-in-law to New River Gorge Bridge,BABCOCK State park (Their first time) and walked around the lake taking pictures of the Beauty of Nature, a beautiful drive !
Driving along the Midland Trail is a nice break for those used to traveling the interstate. The scenery is pleasant all year round.
