The Garden is dedicated to the collection and display of the world's tropical plants, and to the education of both children and adults about the plight of the world's rainforests. At a time when rainforest plants are disappearing at an alarming rate, the Garden is working to preserve as many species as possible for the benefit of future generations. « less

Really off the beaten path and sort of difficult to find, this is located around the 7 mile marker on the Hawaii Belt Road between Hilo and Akaka Falls park, near Onomea Bay. Driving north of Hilo on Highway 19 there is a sign for "4 Mile Scenic Drive", it is 8 1/2 miles north of Hilo on the Big... More

So lovely this rainforest filled with tropical plants! I could not take fifteen steps without taking another picture. We also got to see TWO mongeese up close, but they were too fast to catch on camera! When you see the Bay and the ocean and the rocks being hit by the waves it takes your breath away. So beautiful! Lasting... More

This is a little side trip that is well worth the time. Unfortunately I was a little pressed for time and could only spend about 45 minutes here. Although I was able to see most of the garden I didn't have the time to really take it in as I would have liked. I took about 40 pictures, yes nearly... More

I can't get this place of my mind. It was the "Queen of all Island Gardens" Please take your time when you explore the garden or you will miss the "hidden message" that is revealed in it's entirety here and only in parts and pieces throughout the other islands.

We would have paid the full $15.00 each, but when we asked about a veteran discount, they told us veterans were free (yeah me!) This was well worth the morning spent touring the grounds. We came across it when we walked down a public access path which leads to part of the Garden (you cannot access it from the public... More

We went to this botanical garden yesterday, were told by friends who lived in Hawaii for several years that May would be a good time to visit because lots of plants would be blooming. There are so many amazing tropical plants and the sizes of the trees and leaves make you feel like you suddenly are the size of an... More

We love these gardens and have been going for years. We also send their tropical bouquets to family, friends back home. So much more exotic than regular flowers. The Big Island has such incredible variety of climates and terrains, there's really not much space left over for the quintessential South Pacific tropical vegetation we've all dreamed about from Tarzan movies.... This is the most amazing tropical garden ever! I have found my heaven! I spent over 3 hours here just wandering around in complete peace and didn't want to leave. This is my second time here and I just can't get enough of the plants, shoreline, and total peace and serenity of the gardens. Make sure you wear long sleeve... More

The only reason the I didn't give it the top rating is because of the entrance price ($15 each). My wife likes to go to botanical gardens anywhere we travel, and I wanted to get some pictures of tropical flowers, so we went. The parking lot was very full, but the park is so big that we were not around... More

This is an easy ride right outside of Hilo. We chose this garden over the World Botanical Gardens because it looked like there was more focus on plants and nature rather than zip lines and segways. If you are taking small children they may have a tougher time walking back up the ramp from the ocean area. This is a... More
