A very large, nice beach with great views. Right at the west side of Golden Gate Park so plan to visit with the Tea Garden and Botanical Gardens or other park destinations.
My wife and I went here in the early afternoon with our cousins (locals) to walk their dog. You get a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the place is just gorgeous. There are porter potties at the entrance and plenty of parking.
I do so recommend dating the 30-40 minute trip out of downtown SF to Ocean Beach. I went late afternoon to watch the sunset. The sand was fine and warm. You could see the hills from far covered with a fog. It was like a dream. The ocean had hard waves, so it's perfect for surfers. Since it's October, the... More
This is a big open beach, jogging/biking trails run up top through the dunes. dogs are allowed here. nice place to enjoy a relaxing evening walk or surf if you have a wetsuit
I love this beach vs Santa Cruz or even SF own Bakers Beach. The sand is softer and less people. The Zoo is right across the street for more outing. Great place to take the kids for a little sand castle race.
We had a great time hunting for sand dollars - there are oodles of them if you head away from the Cliff House along the beach. Any sand dollar that washes up on the beach is already dead, so there's no reason to feel guilty about taking them home as souvenirs. We also saw washed up jelly fish, crabs, and... More
Loved this beach vs Venice and Santa Monica due to less people and the water was warm even near sunset! The pier was nice and the local were very kind. Found parking right away basically coin paying about $1 per hour not bad..... Food within a short walking distance. Will be going back for a life time
We lucked out the day we went to visit Ocean Beach because the fog lifted just as we got there. There were several people enjoying the surf and it was fun to watch them "catch a wave." The Pacific Ocean was beautiful.
Ocean Beach was a family outing since I was little. It is a long expansive beach and walking the whole length is a good walk. The weather in San Francisco can be grey and foggy, windy r with luck, sunny. Never thing it's summer surely we'll have warmth. Take a warm outer wear. You will still enjoy the ocean waves,... More
There are firepits for bonfires on the stretch of beach directly across from the Beach Chalet restaurant (around Great Highway & Lincoln). You can buy firewood, a lighter, and all the stuff you need for smores at the Safeway on La Playa & Fulton (if you need non-gelatin marshmallows, you can find them at the natural foods co-op on Judah...
